My Refurbished ROBO 3D Plus was delivered today (My first printer). I understand it's a pretty good printer right out of the box but with some mods can be a great printer. What should I do first?

    TIA

Just print with it :) lets see what kind of results your getting then we can advise upgrades based off your needs.

My go to response is to get an lcd controller so you can print without being hooked up to a pc

Thanks guys. It's waiting for me to unbox when I get home. I'm completely new to 3D printing, but not tech. I taught myself how to build drones and program flight controllers. I hope I'm smart enough to figure 3D printers out as well.

LOL. Those responses were from the same guy I realize. Thanks Geof. I notice in your profile pic you have the R1 pretty close to the wall. How much clearance do you need?

Print these rollers for your filament. They're on Thingiverse. Never had issues with these and worth it

I'm not a fan of spools hanging out above a glass bed ;). Just an opinion, I use a wall ousted set up

Welcome to the forum and to 3d printing!!!!

    Let the learning curve begin.

I assume you will want to being using the software that comes with the printer - Matter Control. That's fine to begin with just be sure to read the manual.
    http://wiki.mattercontrol.com/Main_Page

The first "Mod" is a rather unspectacular one I recomment: Print some higher feet so you can get more air flow into the small fan on the bottom.

Oh yeah, that last link takes you the wonderful world of downloadable FREE 3d printer files. Don't even DARE to begin exploring unless you have at least an hour to spend!!! Mind my words you WILL get lost in your own imagination.

    Again, welcome.

To each their own LOL, I prefer an over the top spool holder so I don't have to print near a wall.
I use this one after trying a half a dozen other configurations:

I also run PLA filament and an oiler like this one:

I highly recommend using an oiler to help prevent jams.

Aluminum heated bed plate with an actual heater that is worth using and the Mosfet to run it between the control board-PSU-bed heater.

I personally... especially with a new machine dont think the heater would be necessary. I do full build daily on oem bed/heater with no issues. Now it is a valid upgrade if its needed in your situation after some printing has been done (my opinion, not fact)

The plus is a pretty decent little printer

My first upgrades(just for informative reasons, not oushibg you to do ant of them) was dual part cooling fans for pla, lcd controller, then i did an e3d hotend upgrade and later swapped in a promethius v2 hotend to try out.

When my ramps board died i converted to a generic ramps...

Thats it :) pretty solid machine

Edit: forgot after all that i replaced the bed (new one was warped pretty bad) and went to mesh leveling but that was due to chips after 1000s of hours of use on the original

My wife and I stared at it working. We never even turned on the TV after the kids went to bed. Some fine tuning is needed. I didn't even touch the settings. We're big Star Wars fans and my wife found files on Thingiverse for Han Solo buckles.

    What do you all think?

Thanks. Having a blast. I wish I didn't have to work today!

    I know the feeling Curtis!
I take my prints to work to show off and have given away dozens of prints.
My house and shop are full of little "things" I've printed to fix or modify stuff around the house.
If I ever get some food grade filament watch out! New table settings for the grandkids!

    I'm addicted....after only two days.

    Han solo buckles

I also ran to Fry's and picked up a couple different brands of filament to test. I have my first commission for a lightsaber hilt.

So since this is an R1+Plus, and, I am a bit biased towards my own work. I think the first upgrade should be firmware and switching from Marlin 1.0.0 auto bed leveling to Marlin 1.1.0 MESH bed leveling. At the very least to bilinear automatic bed leveling. It's really a free upgrade. No printing, no disassembly and reassembly, no buying new parts, minimum downtime, and a better overall printing experience, especially if you get a Full Graphics LCD Smartcontroller as upgrade number 2.

    But that's just me.

I would upgrade the firmware through Matter Control. For a LCD smart controller something like Raspberry pi?

    Thanks
