Rails are in and we will be starting this over the weekend. We had two that started off as Betas and one has had the official bed replacement/rails and some other mods done. The other one still had the original joke of a bed :) with drawer slide rails

Just got the rail kit in from BangGood: http://www.banggood.com/200600800mm...pport-and-SCS8UU-Bearing-Block-p-1104573.html

600 mm version (which is looong).

The goal at the end is to have one of them that has the leadscrew replacement use the official linear rail bed replacement (because that bed is smaller) and the one with the volcano on it use the new (huge) bed. That one still hast the original 5/16 threaded rods as well and the other one has the leadscrew kit.

That way the one with the larger bed will have the lower detail components (but we are always printing bigger stuff on that one) and the other one have all of the higher tolerance parts.

Will almost certainly use an aluminum plate for the bed itself.

Yea, I was thinking "the bigger the better" until I unwrapped them :)
Still going to use them, but they make for a honking huge bed.
    Absolutely going with aluminum too...

This is the beauty of the R series... they are so easy to just blow out and do crazy upgrades on.
Want leadscrews? Go for it. What a bigger bed? Go for it. Want taller build volume? Go for it.

    They are very hackable.

The C2/R2 will be less so. Not unhackable, but less easy to do it with. Different market though

I just received the same kit yesterday, except I went with the 400mm rods. Looking forward to ditching the drawer slides! Lead screws are on the way as well.

Having fun modding, and still haven't printed the file that influenced me to get the printer in the first place!

Going to go heater free for the start (two silicone heater pads are like ... $50 each and I need two).
If I really feel the urge for a heated bed I can add them later.

You can always have AliRubber make a custom sized heater at less than the cost of two heaters. They will make nearly any size in nearly any wattage you want, you just have to PM them.

You could probably do something similar to that Ultimaker Original hack some makerspace in Europe did where they mounted the Ultimaker upside-down on a massive linear actuator, inverted the extruder assembly and hacked the firmware so that it would touch off on the floor and climb up the wall while printing crazy tall objects.

Still limited in X & Y but it was pretty funny to look at how much effort they put into it.

    EDIT:

Some googling reveals it was actually a kickstarter.

I'm guessing it wasn't wildly successful after the kickstarter lol. Never heard of that one, was interesting to look at. Thanks for the link!

@mark tomlinson I'm gonna need you to do that

I think it is purely a makerspace thing overseas. They have a version for the Ultimaker 2 in their updates.
