Answered Parts fan not working properly.

    Hello,

    I am pretty new to 3d printers so the solution might be obvious.

    I needed to replace my parts fan because I broke it when replacing the heating element, I bought pretty much the same fan (40x40mm 12V) wired it properly into the same port, checked for continuity, but the voltage doesn't rise above 4.44V. The LED screen on the front is showing all the different speeds I am trying to set it to, but without any results..

    Edit: When i set the temperature to a higher value the fan makes a slightly different sound ( hardly noticeable )

    You need to make sure it is a 12vdc fan and try flipping the wires on it (some dc fans will work wired backwards -- they will just spin backwards and some will not).

    It is also possible that the RAMPS board is failing and the output that drives that FAN Is no longer working.
    Try hooking the fan directly across the 12v output from the power supply and if it runs correctly THEN I would suspect the RAMPS

    2nded. Also ensure that where you are hooking up your parts fan is correct. There are 5V outputs on the ramps board if I recall correctly. Maybe snap a photo of your ramps board and where your hooking up your part cooler?

    It is a 12V fan and it spins in the right direction..

    umm
    I measured the voltage on the board and it is exactly 12V..

    The cable must be bad because if i measure it near the fan it's not 12V :/


    Time to replace the cable i guess?

    Edit: i believe i have found the weak spot..

    Good catch and ouch! That means messing with the wiring harness loom. Simple? Yes, tedious? Yes :)

    That was not the faulty part of wire!
    OMG..

    hmmm
    I might have a bigger problem.

    wires were not the problem :/

    The voltage drops when i connect the fan.

    Is the RAMPS board broken then?

    Edit: There is another fan port on the board.. it's for a fan in the case..
    When i connect it to that port the voltage stays the same..
    I guess a new RAMPS board is needed?

    And the fan is set to 100% in your controller? Keep in mind the part cooler is the only adjustable speed fan controlled by the slicer/controller.

    I'd be at this point and see what shakes after that. It sounds like the fan and wiring is both good and that pretty well only leaves the ramps :D

    Please keep in mind this part of Marks message. If its an R1+ that hasn't been updated to a generic ramps it will take about an hour of your time to get it generic. not hard- just relanding some wires.

    Finally back, i had a closer look on the broken board and the problem is just a burnt transistor.. i will replace it in a couple of weeks when the new one comes (and i also need a new hot air gun.... for soldering..)

    If it is the Q3 MOSFET that drives the bed -- good luck :) Usually it burning up / dying takes out at least one other component. Still if you want to, give it a go.
