Is Filastruder worth backing?

Seshan I had the same thought at first too, I had a hard time understanding how pellets that are colored could uniformly color the filament but in the comments area the creator does comment that it is uniform and did show a picture. I guess we will ultimately see. Apparently OSPrinting is meeting with their supplier later this week to discuss getting in a larger variety of colorants since now there is a demand.

 

I saw a pic of someone that made light blue filament with filastruder and the color looked pretty even..... That said I'm not to concerned about blotchy or uneven color. If I am looking to print a finished looking item I will either use store bought filament or sand, prime and paint my print. My goal in backing the filastruder is to be able to print whatever I want without having to worry about conserving filament due to cost. I would also like to be able to recycle prints but I understand we will have to wait until someone is able to design a grinder that will produce the proper size ground plastic.

About masterbatch: It's pretty easy. If the instructions call for say, 50:1 ratio, then take 1tsp of masterbatch, mix with 1 cup pellets:




then stir:


Then, spool it up:


and print:


Here's a finished hopper, Filastruder filament.



Printed at 90mm/sec perimeters, 113mm/sec infill. Pretty fast for a Solidoodle.

Hard to really capture in photos, but the coloring is definitely consistent. Just like the OEM black parts on the Solidoodle.

Seshan, know anyone in the states you could have it shipped to? Would that help at all?

 

Tim if you were to mix less masterbatch would you have gotten a lighter black? That is what I am really wondering, how the color is affected by the ratio of the mix.

Now who is going to try to find a way to replicate a wood filament ??

 

No I don't, and all the kits are now backed I wonder what they will be doing after the kickstarter. And how much they will be selling for.

Yes, you get a sort of slivery grey, depending on the ratio. It's uniform, though.

 

That is exactly what I wanted to hear. Cannot wait to experiment.
