Seems like the power supply is held in only by "friction fit". Boy this one got some friction, I can tell you that.

Any secret to coaxing the bad boy out? This is an modified early R1, no bottom cover or attachment points for one.

Large Screw driver - pry it towards the center
It gets easier after the first time

Got it. Not easy. Now, is the PS fan supposed to run constantly or is it temperature controlled?

Constantly. You can find the exact same power supply (or even one with a bit more wattage) on Amazon (less than $40 last time I bought one).

I'll rig up a test for the fan. It spins free but perhaps it is bad.

I'll also look for a RAMPS board schematic, hoping to find a +5v connection for the LED strip I purchased without "doing my research". If none I'll have to dig into the parts bins to find an LM7805 and other bits to build a supply, or, just order 12V LED COB strips.

Either way, it won't be running today.

Well, someone needs to wake up. Turns out the PS has a very clear "NOTICE" tag that someone should have noticed. Clearly states the fan is temperature controlled.

Guess someone replaced the original PS at some point.

After looking at the link you provided, I am hesitant to try and use what is apparently a +5v supply on the RAMPS. Light as the current draw is on this LED strip, I'd rather not chance it.

The stock PS is 350-ish Watts. You can get a 400w that is the same size with the same outputs :)

I get the impression you think I should change the PS.

:) Youir call, but when things like the fan die other components are usually not far behind and if you want to power lights from it you wil want the extra 50 watts

the fan is OK, pretty sure. There is a sticker on the case that says it is temperature controlled. In searching for replacements I see a few that have the same sticker. Most do not. Always wondered why come people complained of constant fan noise and I did not seem to notice except on long prints.

I'm going with the theory that the engineering is better on a unit that bothered to design in a temperature controlled fan. Too bad the price reflects that by about $10-20.

Most of those seem to come directly from China now. Problematic.

Did you check the power supply with a multimeter? There's a set screw adjustment for fine tuning the voltage output. You might not need a new power supply unless the adjustment doesn't work.
