x motor buzz only

    Hi,
    I turned on the Robo3D today, and booted everything up. When I hit home, the x-motor had a buzz or hum, but doesn't move. Toward the end of the log file during the connection there is an error. Any suggestions?

    What troubleshooting have you done so far?

    Try and isolate the issue by trying to run the motor on a different driver.

    I have reset and rebooted the computer and Robo3D.
    I am able to move the x-head with little force, but slightly more than with the power off. The table will not move with the same gentle force.

    OK, so X motor works when plugged into the Y spot

    What about the other way around.

    The Y-motor doesn't drive the table when plugged into the x driver spot

    can you carefully swap the stepper drivers from x and y then try running x with that one. I'm wondering if the stepper driver is bad or if it just needs tuning. Follow this for tuning steppers: http://reprap.org/wiki/Pololu_stepper_driver_board you can also probe the small circle in the upgrades picture.

    Do you have a multimeter?

    I have a multimeter at home... I don't have time to switch the motors tonight.
    So, the Y motor doesn't drive the table plugged into the x driver. It also doesn't hold the table in place under slight pressure under power.
    The x motor works fine when plugged into the Y driver...
    It doesn't seem to be the motor.

    Wow ok I thought I doublt posted but apparently it just ended with me deleting my post. Re-read what I said above with the key word added in.

    Sorry, I thought I was confused by why you wanted to physically switch the motors... so I deleted the post... but the problem doesn't seem to be the motor.

    Yeah I'm pretty sure it's the driver Hopefully just needs to have it's amperage tuned but it might be bad. Though the fact that it buzzes indicates it's getting power.

    Yeah I'm not familiar with your electrical knowledge, but it's laid out in the stepper driver wiki entry You essentially just need to measure the voltage as described in the picture, then compare that to a working motor. Adjust the screw with the plastic screw driver they supplied you to match the voltage.

    I can handle all sorts of electrical troubleshooting and delicate soldering, but I didn't get any tools with my printer - maybe because I bought it assembled(?). At least when I was in grad school working on building scientific instruments it wasn't a problem. I have a micro-driver with a plastic handle similar to the one pictured, but does the whole driver and head need to be made of plastic? I think I have a plastic flat driver in a kit at home, but I don't know if there is a Phillips or if it's that small.

    No, I didn't get any accessories. Just the printer, cable and short test filament. However, my board looks like the photo in the wiki link (mostly), and it's definitely a Phillips head set screw.

    You should contact them and get them to ship you the accessory kit. It's not always needed if you have a full tool selection: http://www.robo3dprinter.com/pages/technical-support

    The screw driver is flat head, it just fits within the phillips on the stepper driver. Only reason it's plastic is to prevent users from shorting it, but you can use whatever tool you want. I just suggested the plastic one because that's specifically for tuning steppers and probably came in their kit of for the arduino/ramps board.

    Got the voltages measured...
    x= 0.362V
    y =0.308V
    z =0.357V

    Hi Robert,

    Would you be able to switch a stepper driver around? Put one you know is working, in to the spot of the non working motor, and let us know the result.

    Is the driver removed by pulling straight up?
