quadcopter projects

Howdy! After a while of printing (or failing to print) 'stuff'' I wanted to work on a theme/project and decided on Quadcopters and the like. A forum search shows JDM, Soupaboy and Voyager1 talking the talk and I am hoping I can link in with a few R3Ders to chew the fat (read - tease out some assistance) and share in the pain and gain of 3Ding & flying things (hopefully).

I am a complete novice/newbie/fool in quadcopter know-how other than sucessfully buying and burying -nose first, a few mini quads. ( my son who has lived on ps3,4and ipod/iphones has naural flying ability with thousads of hours gaming with controllers where I am fine on a pc but have not engaged in games so am showing my age in lacking coordination with transmitters and being airborne,

I am mid way into my first print and build and am have soldering iron primed....... I welcome any blogging or emailing or skyeing or 'whatever'your preference.

I am looking at printing a quadcopter, could someone recommended me a material to print in; ABS, PLA, PLA/PHA, XT, POLYCARBONATE, CARBON FIBRE?

 

Hi,From what I have read ABS is recommended for extra strength - with commentary from abs quad users that they stand up to a fair bit of punishment. I have printed a few copies of a micro quadi without an issue and even modified it by hand. I have never used other than pla or abs.
Let me know your outcome particularly if you use PLA . goodluck!

 

Thanks, I will print my first one in pla or abs (TBC) and then after that most likely a mix like Mark.

 

How much did that run you mark? Got any links to a BOM?

You people and your flying toys make me want to scratch that itch.

Hi everybody,

I fly a almost fully equipped Quadrocopter (2.5kg/5 pounds take of weight) - not printed, but made of Carbon tubes and a Carbon Frame, 13 inch Props, 180 Watt Motors and very strong lifting up to 15 pounds total weight:-) Has nice Power, Telemetrie, Video transmission to Goggles, OSD, etc., etc. on board...
Anyway, I also got now the ROBO 3D to print many additional parts for my Black Widow Quad Copter and also to print smaller size Copter Frames for Fun Flying. If you need parts - Brushless Motors, Controllers, BEC Power Supplies, Turnigy Lipos, etc., etc. you should note hobbyking.com !!!
Delivery can take a while, but price/quality wise very competitve - I have now 4 years order experiance with them...

For winter time frame I planned to print and to built up this frame which I really like a lot -click.

By the way - who is starting with flying R/C Models - should also look directly for a reasonable R/C Transmitter - minimum 6 channels, better 8 channles and more if you like this hobby to continue for longer time (but I kept also my first DX6i for simulator purposes). Popular for beginners is the Spektrum DX6i and always a Simulator!!! - this will save you finally a lot of money by preventing unnecessary crashes and damages and teach you flying very well!!!... This SIM is directly compatible with the DX6i Transmitter.

Save flying (and do not forget to go for an insurance in adance of your first flights which also covers all damages/crashes you might be responsible for...)

Take care with the Naza;-) I our German Forum many user complain about sudden fly aways... possible due to FW issues and/or GPS signal losses.
Anyway also my APM 2.5 FC crashed already my copter due to a previous FW BUG - But Flying Copter First Person View is GREAT FUN!
