I like it as well. You can print a lot faster while maintaining a good flow of filament.

I just purchase one and will be installing it soon. But I have a few question
    1. I understand it's faster but what about the print quality.
    2. I will be using simplify 3D, do you have suggested setting that I can start with.
    3. How was the installation, any tips

Seems unchanged to me. That is really (IMHO) more a product of the layer sizes and how well the printer is actually laying them down. The only thing negative I did notice was that if your filament is printing stringy, this will make it worse so fine tune your temps. You can run the temperature for the extruder a *lot* colder since the melt zone is ginormous. I went from printing PLA at around 195 to around 175. Experiment.

Don't forget to change the nozzle size in the settings (I did initially).
You can also ramp up the speeds.

Other than be careful? Nothing really tricky about it. The heat block unscrews and then you screw on the new one, mount and lock in the heater core and thermistor, put the block back on and you are good.

I upgraded to one of the metal stud style thermistors at the same time.

I started with the smallest nozzle (the 0.8) but of course the big deal with that upgrade is being able to pump a lot more filament through so I will upgrade to one of the larger nozzle sizes eventually. I want to 'speriment with it some first to make sure I had it working and figured out.

Heads up that E3D has released a 0.4mm volcano nozzle. So, for those of you who, like me, never print smaller than ,4, you now have an option to use the volcano for all printing.
I have them in stock. should have them loaded on the site soon. same price as the v6 version.

Does it matter which way the volcano is facing in terms of the relief cut on top (toward heat break fan vs. away from heat break fan)?

I figure away from fan so the wiring for the heater doesn't run into the fan would be best, but want to make sure.

The thermistor should be closest to the nozzle.

Just wanted to chime in again on this thread that the volcano has definitely been worth it so far (especially since there is a .4 nozzle for it).

That 1.2mm nozzle is a monster, good grief.

So it only took me 6 mo to get around to installing the volcano in my R1. Please note that even though I already had an E3DV6, a firmware update is required to change the extrudder limit fail safe, see quoted thread.

Ok, just ran the Volcano after upgrading the firmware to set the min temp limit to 178C.

I am running it with the .40 nozzle. What I have noticed is the filaments that used to behave very poorly, are now behaving like a dream. I will keep playing with it, but so far it looks like it solves a lot of the issues such as adhesion, being brittle, and just printing like crap.

Very very happy so far, looking forward to fine tunning. @Printed Solid thank you for stocking the .4 nozzle.

Even with the larger nozzles the quality is really good.
I have not yet swapped to the 0.4 yet, been more than happy with the 0.8 (and the faster speed).

@robert sanchez is that the only change to firmware required for the volcano upgrade?
No changes or updates required for the z offset as described in the e3d wiki for the volcano?

I'll be tackling this upgrade soon. :)

I didn't have to do anything to the Z-offset, because the G29 command from the slicer touches off on the bed with whatever hotend you have and it doesn't really matter what the difference is.

I did have to tweak my z-offset just slightly, simplify3d

original code: M565 Z-1; sets the offset for the auto-leveling mechanism by 1 mm

    now reads:
M565 Z-.85; sets the offset for the auto-leveling mechanism by 1 mm

I may tweak it further to -.90

So I completed the volcano upgrade. Now I'm trying to figure out the best settings for Hatchbox ABS.

    -Using MatterControl 1.2
    -.8mm nozzle
    -200* extruder temp
    -80* bed temp.
-Printing "calibration-Box" from MatterControl library (.25infill, .3mm layer height)

And I can't print an extruder fan for the volcano until its printing nicely. :|

Not sure what I should be looking for in regards to finding the best settings.

All same settings as above except extruder temp below is 235*

First make sure you set the slicer to use that 0.8mm nozzle

Secondly, play with the extrusion temperature. For each type of filament I use (PLA, Nylon, etc) the temperature dropped. Some 10% others a lot more. You need to retest all of the types you use to find the best range now.

0.3 is a little low on the layer height for a 0.8 nozzle, try 0.4.
