Smoke Signal kit arrived

This is the kit that mounts a smoke detector near/over the printer and will shut it off if the detector activates.
@Printed Solid had brought these to the forum attention a while back (they were a kickstarter project) and they are now shipping.

If you intend to do any unattended printing, this is the tool to have.

 

Mine showed up too. I agree that I hope it is something we never need to use.
I'm plugging mine in as the master control on my UPS.

 

Yup. I sent my son off to CAD up some boxes to contain the parts. I can't for the life of me find the STL files he talks about referenced anywhere on the kickstarter. He just mentions making the them available. No worry, not a huge issue since all of the parts that make it work are there and the instructions (while minimal) are enough to get you working.

 

That is a jolly good idea on the ups. Hmmm. Going to need to route wires as it is bit far from then printer.

TaDa! got it. Sweet. Now a printing session then a wiring session.

 

Printed the bottom case cover for the relay box and it snapped right on. Perfect.
I'll post a photo once all of the other parts are printed and show the layout and basic assembly.
It has two main boxes: the relay/A/C box and the sensor box. These are connected with a CAT-5 cable (looks like a standard CAT-5) so you can remote mount the sensor.

Nice unit overall, skimpy docs, but enough to do the trick.

 

Got it all assembled and plugged into the unit. First time power-up you have to push the reset button, but seems to be working.
I guess I rally do need to 'smoke' test it and see if it trips as it should.

 

I am not sure on the audible alarm, but I'll sacrifice a match on the printer hardware testing altar and see if we can't get it to actually trip

 

OK, I tested it... it works.
1) There is no audible alarm, but you could easily add one if you needed it.
2) The reset button will restart the printer when it resets the smoke alarm. Looks like this needs to be done every time the printer is powered on.

I burned a match near it and the printer powered down. Hit the reset button and back up it came. The provided CAT 5 cable lets you mount the detector parts 4 feet from the relay/power section, but it looks like a standard CAT 5 so I imagine you could use a longer one without too much trouble.

If you run the robo with the case on it then mounting it near the top inside of the case would work nicely.

 

I pinged the guy via Kickstarter (you can do the same) since someone else asked me the same question recently.
