I cannot find any conclusive front to back instructions for upgrading a robo 3d to a E3DV6.

So I just upgraded my hotend to the E3D V6. I plugged the extruder stepper motor in but nothing happens when I try to extrude or retract. If I plugged it in wrong could I have blown the motor?

No, the stepper will just spin in the opposite direction or not at all if you plug it in the backwards. Make sure all your cables are secure at both ends.

You do have it at printing temperature before trying to extrude or retract I assume?

Does this mod work exactly as described on the Robo R1 +Plus? I want to do the upgrade but not sure if this current printer has had any changes to the drive that might deviate from the instructions in the original post?

    Thanks!

Not really. Why do you want to upgrade?

Hi Mike, when you say not really do you mean it should mount the same as on the prior printer versions?

The original one is not working too bad, but I'm just used to the e3D V6 which is what I have on my other printer. Just prefer to have them both the same, and also easier to stock same parts for both.

I've heard the v6 is a little loose on the quick release for the R1+

I'd personally just stick with the hexagon and put e3dv6 nozzles on it. No reason to upgrade to the v6 unless you plan on printing with A LOT of flexible materials.

The e3d uses a different thermistor than the original Hexagon, so you have to change the firmware so that the machine knows how to read the different thermistor so it reports the correct temperature.

If you make no changes, the machine will think it's reading the original thermistor and report incorrect temperatures.

In either case, more accurate thermistor readings are possible if you perform the PID Autotune procedure.

And then... What is best way to replace new e3d?? Just change firmware or buy MetalStud thermistor. I really concerned it make some problem when I change firmware. And I don't know how to change firmware exactly.

Stud thermistor is easiest programatically, no Marlin editing, re-compiling and uploading needed.

This is not true. The R1+ firmware is on there, they just call it the "Lead Screw Upgrade" firmware. But it's identical to what's on the R1+

They only have that warning to prevent people from trying to "update" their R1+ firmware when there's nothing to update to.

And yes, a metal stud thermistor would mean no firmware changes necessary.

Any update on R1+ compatibility? Not super pleased with the stock hot end with specialty filaments. Even PETG has some major problems.

What's the update you are asking about? Mike Kelly's response in post #378 addresses firmware. Mechanically, the E3D V6 is compatible with the R1+ per the guide way back at the beginning of this thread. However, if you have one of the newer R1+ (Robo makes us all crazy with this, we'll call it the R1+ V2) that has the quick release, some further adapting may be needed. unfortunately, none of the moderators (at least AFAIK @Mike Kelly ?) have the quick release, so we won't be able to post a mount design for you. I do have a customer working on one and he is planning on sharing when he is satisfied that it is working well.

Is there something else that you think hasn't been addressed?
