In doing some reading on the forum, there were some under the impression that the step settings in the supplied Marlin (configuration.h) needed to be tweaked.

Is this still the case with a recent printer (purchased 4/9/2016) with the June 2015 1.0.0 Marlin firmware?

Not sure what you are really going for.
The R1+ firmware from Robo (http://guide.robo3d.com/c/Firmware) is correct.

Other versions on that page are correct for those models (R1, Beta).

Generic Marlin would certainly need to be configured correctly.

Just checking because it seemed to work good out of the box. I just saw some old posts saying the extruder steps needed calibrating because the ones shipped with the printer were not based in reality. I'd have to dig up the reference. Glad to see whatever it was was fixed.

It's good practice to calibrate your extruder regardless of the printer, so that note would still apply.

If you restrict your discussion to extruder steps then follow @daniel871's advice.

OK, Should I be worried about X/Y/Z steps also, or are they good from the factory?

I'm a bit new to Marlin (didn't use it long), my goto firmware was RepRapFirmware on the Delta.

I know I have to locate the source (Robo3D Downloads) and setup the Arduino IDE to customize the steps and other stuff if needed.

As long as you download the one for your version of the R1, there will be no need to change anything other than the E-Steps.

Cool, I'll setup the IDE and download the source so I can tweak the firmware.
