I hope this is showing to allow you to hear the sound. I just installed a new extruder fan Friday and it was working great until yesterday when a grinding sound began. Any idea? It is not filament related as I took it out to make the video

    Thanks

Looks like the extruder stepper is skipping/dropping steps.

If you just position it in the middle of the bed and get it off the plate can you heat it up and extrude normally?

Does this happen only when printing? Does it begin from the start? It sounds like either a motor is stuck/have something in it or a cable touching a fan (sounds like the 2nd to me).
Your extruder stepper does look weird though. Why is it shaking like that?

    Skipping/missing steps most likely.

Those are pretty much the symptoms for a bad or out of tune stepper driver.

New video, trying to simply get filament to come out. Okay is the stepper out or stuck? How hard are these to install?

I think I'd pull the stepper off and see if it spins free. If yes something in the hotend is jamming it up. If it spins remove the hotend and try.

Still a good chance it is the stepper driver. Not the motor. But... Check it and be sure

The stepper driver is one of the parts on the RAMPS board at the bottom.
Did you try to test the stepper disassembled?

I took off the bottom and checked the wiring. Everything is secure, and don't know of anything that can be on the board to get it working. I have seen posting about "tuning" but I don't know if that would work under this situation

I did also remove the motor to see if it would spin free. It didn't spin free.

Disconnected and with no power if the motor shaft will not turn by hand then it is a bad stepper. If you mean that it would not turn when commanded by software then it could still be a bad stepper driver card.

This appears a little over my knowledge level and I am scheduling an appointment for next Monday (only time they had when I am not working) with a Robo tech to help me with this. I fear I will screw it more than it already is. Should I just spring the 14 dollars for a new motor or am I possibly just wanting to address a symptom (stepper motor stuck) when the cause could be electrical related (the drivers)?

For the record, the first line of "Robo" help techs are worthless. If they can't send you a photo or a video they have nothing else to offer

To see if its a bad stepper motor do as mark said try to turn it powered off. If that feels ok you can switch the plugs on the board for the extruder and x axis. If it works in the x its good. If youd rather talk through this private message me and i can call you.

Well that doesn't sound too hard. I will give that a try this evening, thanks

I swapped the wires of the motors and when I did the bed started hesitating as it it went back and forth:

I was unable to get the extruder to move as I was moving it manually

I then swapped it back and got the same results I have been getting:

Bed working fine, stuck extruder again. Something appears to be wrong in the electronics
