i donno how but my Y belt was loose
i removed the end and tightened the belt, as tight as the one in the video
then i tried extruding 100mm from the extruder, but it only extruded 30mm from the mark i made on the filament
so i decided to clean the hot end once and for all
here is how it looks like now.
i'll put it back later on as i have to go out

i think i screwed up something

after i cleaned the hot end and put back everything and turned it on. the hot end wasn't heating up
i realized i wrapped the resistor with the two ends touching the copper hot end.
i unplugged everything and isolated the wires from the hot end. but after i put everything back it still didn't work
i have some current flowing through it as my tester shows. but no heat

did i burn the board ? or something on the board ?
how can i test this ?

The resistor is basically a heat based resistor which changes as it gets hot
If you shorted the pieces together it would show up as a very high heat indication on the extruder probably in the 300° range
That type of a Temperature would immediately shut off the extruder assembly and kill all processes
And could possibly kill the thermistor

If you opened it up to separate the wiring and put it back together properly and you get a reading but it does not change even if you hold it with your fingers then the thermistor is probably dead and needs to be replaced. When I say dead I mean shorted permanently so that is no longer reacting to heat

You're gonna need to remove your ramps board from your arduino board and take a look at the traces to see if you blew something.

I shorted my extruder out and it blew a trace and my mosfet. I've since fixed it but first we need to see what the level of damage you've received. Hopefully you didn't blow a trace and we can just replace the mosfet.

Unscrew your ramps/arduino combo from the case and pull the arduino board off. It might be a bit tricky but it'll come apart.

Once you look under the board for any blown traces. It'll be real obvious. then look at your mosfet for any charring or ashes

Let me find that link I found before about how to test mosfets.

i get a 7.2 ohms reading from it when i test its resistance?
    and i get connectivity

is it possible i burnt something on the board ? anything i can check ?
i checked the D10 but getting a weird reading
    i tested the D9 (Fan) on %100 giving 12v

Mike do you know the normal resistance for a thermistor at room temp

    100k at 25C, hence 100k thermistor

    Looks just like mine!

Sorry man, I hope you've got some soldering skills to remove that and replace the trace. Otherwise you'll need to order a new ramps.

    my soldering iron is 60W
is it too hot for an electronic board ?
i usually use it for electrical work

That's pretty hot but if you're quick with it it shouldn't matter.

The first step is removing the dead mosfet. A lot of people swear by copper braiding for solder removal but i could never get that to remove everything so I stopped using it. I much prefer the solder sucker bulb desolderer like this one from rat shack: http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...62731&filterName=Type&filterValue=Desoldering

Here's the part # for the mosfet: STP55NF06L

    Link to mouser page: http://www.mouser.com/Search/Produc...06Lvirtualkey51120000virtualkey511-STP55NF06L

For the trace repair, you can do it properly by laying down new copper or you can do what i did and just use solder as a jumper. Or solder in a piece of wire.

That iron is fine, just spend less time heating things :)
You can replace the run on the board by running a wire in parallel.
It is a short run and no vias.

Count me as prefers the solder removal braid, but only because it is easier to use for really fine connections (just add flux). Either tool will work in this case, it is not a 5-layer surface mount board after all ;)

BTW: there are pens you can buy that lay down silver-compound (artificial traces) and you could re-lay the trace with that, but frankly a jumper is simpler.

Mark, you're thinking of the conductive ink pens like this one on Adafruit:

    http://www.adafruit.com/products/514

But yeah, I'd just use a jumper. I blew my RAMPS board too but I cannot tell where it's blown from a visual inspection. I went ahead and bought both a new RAMPS and Taurino board since I couldn't visually see where it was damaged. Later, after wiring in the new boards and moving all the connections to them, I separated the old RAMPS from the old Taurino and the Taurino powered up fine and communicated so it looks like the problem is on the RAMPS board. Now I just need to figure out where. But if nothing else I have spare parts now if needed.
