http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:8757 this one I meant. Something where it exits the normal build area. Or printing multiple objects.

Hopefully. I can try that tomorrow.

Mike asked me to print the pyramid. I didn't take any anti warp precautions so the corners peeled up but you can see that I have zero stringing and pretty good print quality for reasonably high speed print. (80mm/sec but rate limited by 15sec cooling delay).

I haven't done anything special here.
    • I'm using crappy Octave filament
    • I've got my speeds all cranked to 80mm/sec
    • I haven't changed retraction/accel/decel/etc from default
    • 220C extruder, 100C bed
It might be the EZStruder/E3D combination helping prevent the stringing but I don't recall having significant stringing even with the stock extruder, hot end combo.

Good looking print man. I guess I'll see if my E3D is the ticket or if I need to jump on the EZStruder as well.

    Thanks for trying that.

How many bearing does the ezstruder holder require? It seems like it needs 2 per side for a total of 4?

Yes, four. Just like the standard carriage.

My smooth rod replacement, first pass:

I haven't mounted to the printer yet but this is about as little height as I can consume. I'm going to try leveling with washers instead of springs and then I'll only lose 2 or 3 mm of height instead of 1/2".

(Ignore the warping, I used hairspray instead of ABS juice and that caused a small amount of noncritical distortion.

Looks nice man how hard was it to get the bearings in there?

Not too bad. The top wall is so thin that it separates when I put the beatings in. I was able to press fit them by hand with moderate force.

    Good news/Bad news.

    Bad
    • I flubbed the cut on the smooth rods by forgetting to account for my offset
    • The home switch needs to be relocated
    • You have to tape the bed wires out of the way
    Good
    • If I do a higher quality print of the end pieces, I think I can get away without leveling springs.
    • You don't lose any of the heated Y length
    • The bed has dramatically better stability

I added a little extra clearance mass to the bearing blocks for improved stability. Reprinted and did a test fit. The bed is within 0.07mm of level between the four corners. I'm not sure whether to go with the spring leveling mechanism or not. My expectation is that the bed is probably not that level so the springs can line up the corners but the bed still won't be completely flat.

    The next two tasks are:
    1. create spacers for the belt mount
    2. create a way to trigger the endstop.

Hopefully, I can get all of this done by EOD tomorrow and then publish my results.

I just published the smooth rod retrofit to Thingiverse here:
    http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:211965

If you don't need to use a spring based leveling method, you only lose 3mm of height and none of the usable bed area!

Leon, how level is your glass bed. Mine is proud in the centre by about 0.4 mm

Hats for printers... Yes, a humidifier box and a little packing tape eliminated most of my warp problems.
