Verticle rod and toranado

    Is the weight of the tornado heavier than the stock? And by how much?

    the toranado is almost half the weight of the stock carriage

    Interesting work. I'll have to check this out closer tonight. I like the i3 style mod for the x axis.

    Yea with a normal i3 extruder you might be able to get away with the middle rods I'll double check make sure the file is updated for the in between rods

    I understand the reduced weight, but has anybody pushed the "printing" speeds and/or changed the acceleration settings?

    What I really like about this design is the ability to quickly change print heads. Using the JST plugs built-in the design is nice. I'm looking to explore the 0.7mm to 0.9mm print nozzles, but lifting the extruder, removing the nozzle without breaking the "heat-break" has made me reluctant.

    Be aware that if you push the printing speed to high for a larger nozzle you will exhaust the meltzone in the extruder :)
    That is why the Volcano exists

    I run the volcano machine at max speed for the steppers and can use a 1.8mm nozzle without a problem. Smaller nozzle work too of course. When you do not need the detail you can print really quick.

    1) i would like to see yours in action.
    2) whats the fastest speed youve been able to do successfully?
    3) whats the infill % on the toranado and the vertical rod?

    I printed at 85 % on everything the fastest i print at is infill and I print at 60 the robo has a real heavy build plate so not alot we can do about it. I'll get a video up in a couple days I'm away for training now

    Unless you replace the X/Y axis steppers you are not going to hit a max speed that is night-and-day different from where you are now.
    The moving mass is the limit which is what @Spidematt is hinting at.

    I have no idea what you are trying to achieve.
    If you want faster you need steppers that will move faster (probably more torque since the weight is what it is).
    You need to research Nema-17 motors with the specs you want.

    The Nema-17 specification only defines the face plate/mount points for the motor and not the length, torque, etc.

    Personally I think you would be better served moving to a volcano hotend if speed is the issue. You sacrifice a small amount of detail for a much faster print speed (because you are putting down at least twice as much plastic on every pass). How fast the steppers can throw the baseplate around is one part of the equation, but how fast you can push out plastic is a bigger one.

    I can tell you on the gmax/volcano combo...it gets rediculous how fast the hobbled bolt spins to try to feed enough filament, cant imagine how fast with upgraded torque lol :D

    I would think you could get away with large print and little details without upgrading X,Y. Just looking to speed up the less detailed prints.

    Yep volcano is the way to go. I use a .8 nozzle and .3 layers. Nice trade off on speed and layers. When I need the large build volume but also need details I swap it to the .4 nozzle (volcano) and I can still run a pretty fast speed.

    New machine is going to be coming soon so I wont have to switch back and forth so often (thats in my opinion the best way :D , set one up for big and one up for detail like @mark tomlinson has with his Robos)
