I guess I thought they would be a good idea, but three located 1/2 way up doesn't really do much of anything. Especially when the bed is all the way at the top, the bed blocks the light anyway, so they don't shine any light on the print surface . . . .

Not sure of my point, but might it be a good idea to install some more and link them together somehow?

remove the connector on the board and add more! Light that baby up :D lol just make sure you get the correct voltage LEDS :D

Please note that the most common LED strips can be purchased in 5M lengths and usually cut to any length you need in groups of 3 LEDs. The most common drive voltages are +5V and +12V. make sure whatever new ones you get are the proper voltage as @Geof mentions, most probably +12V since it is driven directly from the RAMPS board.

    Banggood example

Probably since the supply is 19v.
They may have done it from the Pi since there is no real RAMPS in there, but I suspect they did it from the new combo board that replaces the RAMPS.

Still a lot of stuff on the pseudo-RAMPS board is driven at 12v that is why I suggested that is likely the LED voltage. And you can't source the LED strips in 18V either. The Pi does not allow enough current to pass through the GPIO pins to light up strips of LEDs, maybe a single LED but without additional boost circuitry it can't (shouldn't) drive a strip.

Much of theirs is probably still at 12v, but not all. The Extruder heater is actually at 19v ... We just do not know enough about that board yet HOWEVER -- you are no doubt correct that it is powered from there and almost certainly at 12v unless they added a dropping resistor network somewhere.

Just want to be clear that we are assuming this :) We do not know for certain.

Added a LED light bar attached to a USB with a goose-neck. Then routed a USB extension cable to the back, held it in place with some double sided foam tape, and BOOM. LED overhead lighting for around 10 bucks. (That's not a camera flash)

    LED Light on Amazon.

On the R2 the existing LEDs are plugged into the "Fan2" connector (blue & grey wires) and measured voltage is 12VDC. Anyone know how much current "Fan2" can source? If you add a lot of bright LEDs the current can start to add up.

AFAIK there is next to no documentation on their custom control card. You will need to call them

Just noting that some of the LED strips can be hungry, hungry hippos on power. Had to run a separate power supply for a 60-LED NeoPixel ring on one project.
