Filament keeps stopping.

    I'm printing with ABS, and sometimes I can get a whole print done, but frequently the extrusion just stops happening. My hobbed bolt is clean. The extruder is running. The printhead is at temp (195C)

    When it happens, I cuss a bit, pull back the filament and snap it where the bolt dug into it, clean out the debris, then reinsert and then extrusion is fine!

    Any ideas what's going on here?

    clogging of the nozzle. Might need a new one or to clean it out (atomic pulls or pull off and torch out any and all debris in the nozzle)

    possibly the temperature isn't high enough

    possibly out of spec filament in random spots

    possibly cold end fan died

    Possibly impossible that your running ABS at 195

    I am skeptical as to the accuracy of the thermistor circuit in these printers, see schematic and Atmel AVR data sheet re analog input impedance and pin leakage current, but that's what's indicated.

    I'm running a test print now with PLA to see if it's filament or machine.

    unless you've changed the thermistor type in the firmware to the wrong type I seriously doubt thats your issue.

    ABS at 195 would be entirely to cold.

    edit: It wont work

    They are not highly accurate, but they are within a couple of degrees normally (unless you have the incorrect thermistor type defined in the firmware).

    I haven't changed the thermistor type. The ABS extrudes well when I run it manually, and for most of the print.
    Layer to layer adhesion is ok, maybe could be better.

    Do you have the R1 or the R1+?
    The thermistor mounting on the R1 was a joke and you may just need to fix that.
    The R1+ was fine.

    I believe this is the R1+ It has the linear bearing Y instead of drawer slide. I also put thermal grease in with the thermistor to increase coupling to the head.

    Beta had drawer slides, R1 had linear rails. R1+ had leadscrews.

    Ok. Then mine is the R1. The thermistor is nicely seated in the well and the thermal grease is still in there.

    PLA print is progressing nicely, but it hasn't run long enough to say that it's definitely the filament yet.
    I've printed a few rolls of this ABS, and only recently had these problems where it just stops extruding.
    I suppose it's possible that somehow I keep getting a clog and every time I pull the filament the clog comes out with the filament. If the PLA print works, then I will go grab another roll of ABS and try again.

    Ok, it's now printed twice as many layers (2.6x) as its best run with that ABS. I think I need a different roll.

    My most simple idea is: Possibly, your filament is rapped under it's self and gets stuck when pulled tight.
