    I have the R1+
Whenever I start printing, the stepper on my extruder emits that familiar burning smell you get when you run a motor at too high a voltage. It also occurs just running the motor without filament.
Any idea what could be going on? I didn't flash any firmware.

Is the extruder stepper running hot? It is not a voltage driven motor, rather a stepper (current driven, by PWM steps like a servo would be). It is possible that the stepper driver is over driving it, see how hot it is.

Alright. Ill print a stepper cube and see.

Hmm ok. Maybe it was just that model I tried to print. I made a large and thin name plate that was about 200mm square, so maybe MatterControl lost its mind at that one

It should be getting roughly a 1 amp drive, but the driver can be going flaky and it can source as much as 2.0-2.5 amps... when it drives too heavy the motor will overheat. It will still work fine, but that is not a happy situation :)

I'd check to make sure your cables are tight and well seated as well :D just in case
