Angus (MakersMuse) had a good video on ABS and why you may not want to use it anymore in 2017

    Do you agree with Angus?

Its a sad reality but the majority of my clients dont want to hear whats better. They want ABS and if I say no...off they go :D. It wont go anywhere for awhile in my area me thinks (most these clients are commercial, standard person just wants what works)

Give-em some material science lessons :)

Actually commercially it can still make sense (on the basis of cost) but from a maker standpoint ... I don't see it.

Wild guess ... Heat deflection most likely. PET and PETG are not a lot better in that respect.

I still use a lot of PETG, especially since most suppliers have added solid colors to the mix. You just can't print everything in translucent. I am trying to move more toward things like polycarbonate and nylons because I would like the heat resistive properties those types of filaments provide.

I would bet that 75% or more is ABS at the shop and the rest is PC or Nylon. Occasionally PLA but that is just for people that want cheap props and the such.

For the machine shop- since we do small batch runs (job shop) I make jigs and the such out of PLA. Volcano and .5 layers makes for some darn fine jaw jigs on the mills :D Expecially since often the job wont come back, or if it does it will be a long time so when were done, we pitch it :D

Geof, I use PLA to make custom tube bending jigs for my PC case mods. I can get complex angles worked out in CAD so that the tubes fit the first time. Unless I overheat or otherwise crack a tube while bending. Most of my last PC mods have been custom water loops with hardline tubing (PETG).

In order to keep my old 2002 Nissan running I have a few 3D printed pieces under the hood and PETG does not hold up to engine heat. Why I am doing more nylon and polycarbonate.

I've used (I only print PC on my Ultimaker) Ultimaker brand and polymaker PC and PC MAX. Printed solid runs sales on them where the spools are cheap cheap. I stock up. I think his next sale is black friday.
