Ended up being a problem with the Z contact, I guess when the head crashed it threw things off so ever G28 was sending the extruder higher and higher. Will need to find a way to tighten this X axis belt, I think it is way too loose now.

With a 60 degree swing in the weather this week I was messing around again with UBL. I find it odd that there would be so much variance between consecutive runs - is this just normal? Here is an example of four runs done one after the other.

A lot of that has to do with probe repeatability. The R1 does not use the most precise probing mechanism. That an glass warps in weird ways when heated.

We are not talking about precision machines here.

Certainly not lathe or CNC style precision :) Missing a few decimal points

Try checking out marlinfw.org/docs/gcode/G029-ubl.html for a guide of how to set

I am no longer supporting the R1 with Marlin builds. I believe @danzca6 will have a build or two moving forward.

Installed 1.1.8 and working through the UBL tweaking. Got much of the bed dialed in, just a bit more to go...

    James -

I got Marlin 1.1.8 going this weekend as well on my son's Robo R1+.

I set it up for Mesh and I'm using a 5x5 matrix. I'm using a strip of paper as a feeler gauge to set my points.

I took my Mesh offsets from Marlin and plotted in Excel using a surface map. My bed can certainly use some mechanical leveling, but as shown in the single layer test pattern print, adhesion is good everywhere.

Overall, I'm happy with this version and I have no plans to update further. Besides, I think the Marlin team is on a 32 bit crusade right now and I don't expect much to result that will help this little Robo R1+ any further.

Now I can give the printer back to my son and enjoy my Robo R2.

@Ed Ferguson I basically did the same for the R2, I have a version 1 and version 2 bed and neither are completely flat. I decided to use M420 In Jn Zn.nnn as I am just finding that easier to adjust individual points in the UBL mesh.

The 'official' method of adjusting point in UBL is a little wierd, in my opin. I like the ability to get it near a point and it will snap to it, but to just adjust the number via the jog wheel without any movement from the head is odd. I will keep M420 in the back of my mind if I get to frustrated. lol

I'm just using G29 S4 Z-n.n to offset the entire mesh as needed. Of course I'm using ver 1.1.8 set up with Mesh Bed Leveling and therefore manually setting each point value of the grid using the knob and a paper feeler gauge. I chose this method as I'm not confident in using the Robo nozzle as an automatic probe. The Robo design with the limit switches getting triggered via lifting the carriage is clunky at best.

My experience so far using the paper feeler gauge is that I get a good Mesh every time with no points that are off. It works first time, every time for me. The only thing I may do is adjust G29 S4 Z-n.n in my start-up code to get perfect model height when printing a test 20mm cube. I'll set the extrusion multiplier higher for the first layer if I need more adhesion. So far I find I get a good test print every time I issue G26.

Yes, I agree. I did want to try out UBL with the automatic probe to see how it went compared to doing mesh, like I was with previous. I really only had to adjust the outer points, but several times. And even then, after doing a real print, realized that some needed additional tweaking. I think just doing mesh with the feeler is a better, more consistent method. I will switch to that and re-calibrate.

I've started another thread about Precision Peizo's offering to use the hotend as a much more sensitive probe. I've ordered the parts and look forward to putting that into use. With what I've seen from the information on the reprap pages and videos that this will provide a good probe for being able to use UBL as it was intended. We'll see!

On the R1, @Ed Ferguson is correct about the nozzle / bed contact method. It is not very accurate and the bed also flexes which contributes to inaccurate readings, but you can also do UBL with manual probing using the 'B' parameter (I think it is in the LCD menu too). That method uses a 'feeler' guage, paper or other. The reason this is there is that the Marlin developers want to scrap MESH entirely. They just haven't had the guts to do it yet.

Is there a guide for doing the manual mesh leveling? I'd like to move to that and finally ordered some real feeler gauges versus using paper.

I have used both feeler gauges and paper. I prefer paper.
