the default program for stl files was pythonw.exe
when i changed it to matter control.
I wasnt able to download the lithopane from the site listed above. so I changed it back to pythonw.exe. so now I am back to haveing cura open the file automatically.

I was hoping for just a download and choose what I want to open it with.

Just remove the association completely. Then download and save the file do not download and open the file. Once it is downloaded and saved on your local drive you can open it in MatterControl. This is really a Windows issue and not a MatterControl or Cura issue.

Aside from the fixes already listed:
It is a checkbox when you install cura. You clicked the option to open stl files in Cura.
Cura (and pretty much any program you install) will ask you if you want to associate files at initial install and any updates. If you don't want it to be the default, then uncheck the box.
