Not sure what the correct term is for this, but if you look at the picture you will see a chunk of print is essentially missing all around every print (the spot below the S shouldn't exist).

These are four separate models that I printed in one set and ended up with this line around them where there is barely any filament printed out - in fact the pieces just snapped when any pressure was applied.

I've had stuff like this randomly happen before, but usually the prints are bigger so they will survive.

Ideas? This is on the R1+ using Simplify

It may have skipped steps, which is not unusual for the RAMPS / Arduino configuration. Look to make sure that the fan is running on the bottom of your printer. It cools the RAMPS board and should be running 100% of the time if you printer is powered on.

Fan on the bottom of the base?

Yes, under the R1 blowing on the RAMPS board.

It is PLA. I've printed 2/3 of this roll already without an issue.

Edit - pulling out another roll I noticed it covered in dust. I keep a few thousand moisture beads in my filament box and it seems they have shed. I hadn't used that particular spool in a while so I'm guessing it was covered in dust as well. Issue perhaps?

Possibly. I use an oiler for all of mine now and the sponge will clean off anything that is on the filament as it feeds past.

I think it might be something else. Tried it again in ABS and the same exact spot. Oiler is still probably a good idea. Need to try another slicer and see if the problem still happens.

Check the model -- run it through a verifier (netfab, simplify, heck several even)

Never used a verifier before, but gave it a try with netfabb and will see what happens

Different slicers are an excellent idea too. Oiler will only impact PLA so no help there :)

Printed just fine after the repair. Since you mentioned simplify, is that just using the repair options or is there another verifier?

Simplify3D has a validator/repair tool built in, but honestly I still find NetFabb to be the better one

At least I learned another new thing, so thanks. Printed great, but of course have to do it again because it seems when I retapped the screw hole it ended up too big. Love that ABS for strength though - too bad it still has warping issues on anything I ever print with it.

    Don't use it then :)
LOTS of other alternatives that are stronger than even ABS and yet do not warp like it does.

It is not a choice of PLA or ABS -- there are dozens of materials out there.
I never use ABS, 2014 I think was my last ABS print.

So, seems like it might not be a model issue. Printing something new that I designed - ran it through the same program to repair and have the same spots messing up at about the 8.5mm mark. Of course on this current print almost every model is now splitting and coming apart in the same spot. Granted, my modeling sucks, but they are just cylinders.

Abs delamination, swap for another material to rule out mechanical issues/model issues.

Abs is very hard to print without an enclosure

It is printed inside an enclosure and the same thing happened with PLA (didn't separate as much, but same 8.5mm issue).
