Solved R1+ Shutting off

    My R1+ recently started shutting off after a few minutes of use. In my uneducated opinion, it seems like getting the extruder up to operating temperature puts a strain on the machine and causes it to shut down. When the extruder starts to heat up, the LEDs start to flicker, and then it shuts off. After a short amount of time, it will turn back on by itself.

    I recently replaced the psu, hoping that would solve the problem. When I took the factory psu out, the #2 terminal was charred. I'm not sure if that's related.

    Update - 22 April 2019

    It's fixed! For a total of about $50, I've got a working printer again.

    Here's a list of everything I did to solve the problem:

    1) Replace power supply.
    2) Replace control board (keep stock arduino) with kit (control board + stepper drivers). Added bonus of a gaining the reprap full graphics screen.
    3) Flash latest firmware onto arudino.
    4) Re-wire LEDs and fans to the green plug on the control board.

    Possibly related. Check the GCode terminal in whatever host software you are using for errors. Look all the way back to the point where you connected the printer/turned it on and search for the word ERROR. Tell us what errors you find, we can work with that :)

    It doesn't report an error. The GCode keeps updating as if the machine were still on. I forgot to mention that replacing the psu did not solve the issue, but I'm going to keep the new one in there.

    Hmm, usually this is due to Marlin (the firmware) seeing an error and bringing the machine down.
    When it does that it will report an error. If that is not happening then something more fundamental is wrong.
    You have replaced the power supply take a look at the electronics. If the terminal for the power supply end of the wires was charred it is likely the RAMPS (the top card on the stack of electronics where the power wires go to) is also damaged and perhaps even the Arduino (the computer controller card -- bottom of the stack of boards).

    See if you can see any damage visually on the boards/connectors.

    Not sure how you feel about digging into it :)
    My opinion would be to just get one of the all-in-one kits for the electronics (here is an example, not a recommendation for a specific seller, look around there are several) and just swap the electronics. The Arduino, the RAMPS 1.4, the stepper driver cards (little cards on top of the RAMPS board) and then reload the firmware (the FAQ link top of this forum has some details on how to do that). Be certain that you know the actual model of the printer -- you said R1+ -- because the beta, the R1 and the R1+ look very much the same, but the firmware is different. If yours is a recent printer it probably is the R1+ (but be sure you know).

    If that sorts it later you can experiment and bench test the boards if you really want to and determine exactly what is wrong, but this should get you back up quicker

    Yes, it's an R1+. I'm sure.

    I've replaced a couple of the RAMPS before, so I'm not afraid to dig up in there. I pulled out each one and inspected it, as well as the connection on the board. Nothing looked damaged. I ordered a new set of RAMPS right before checking this thread. I'll replace all those first and see if that fixes anything. If not I'll try flashing the firmware. If that still doesn't help, I'll go for a complete replacement kit. Thanks!

    are you certain the fan under the printer is running all the time? A lights out under load is typically that fan, a power supply, board issue (in that order)

    If you forgot to hook up (or it fell off) that small fan connection it will cause you all sorts of grief on the R1+ models (and older models- but R1+ was more often reported as the bottom has a cover)

    Update:
    I replaced all the ramps and did a test print. It still shut off during the bed leveling while heating the extruder.

    I then unscrewed the bottom plate and started a print to check if the fan was spinning the whole time. I also put a big desk fan underneath, pointed at the arduino. This seemed to help, because it was able to print for about 5 minutes after the leveling and extruder heating up. After about 5 minutes of printing, it shut off though.

    Throughout the whole process, it seems like the machine is struggling .The LEDs are flickering a lot, and the extruder fan sounds like it might shut off at any moment.

    Would you guys suggest a new arduino as the next step?

    It’s possible but it really sounds like it’s overheating and shutting down. What voltage is your new power supply and what’s it actually outputting ?

    To measure to output you would need a voltmeter set to dc voltage and touch the red probe to the positive lug and the black lead to the negative.

    I use that same power supply so probably fine.

    You can certainly change the arduino, they are cheap enough to try it.

    Our house line voltage is really somewhere between 110vac and 120vac :) IF YOU ARE LUCKY ...

    lol, what I meant was the photo on amazon has a sticker that reads "115v" while my actual unit has one that reads "110v".

    I've ordered the complete replacement kit. I'll go through that whole ordeal and update you all.

    I had this issue a while ago. The extruder couldn't maintain the correct amount of heat because the voltage coming out of the power supply was a little low. I tested the power supply with my voltmeter, and it could barely maintain 12 volts without a load. When everything is on, the voltage would drop even more. The hot end wasn't maintaining the temperature which the slicer set it to, and then it would shut down the slicer with an error message. I turned the set screw up on the power supply, and that was it. Get a cheap multimeter from Harbor Freight. They have coupons for a free meter with any purchase. It's not the best quality but where else could you find a free multimeter with a battery & test leads?

    Sorry, what exactly do you mean by this? My power supply has a switch to go from 110v to 120v. Not sure what you mean by "set screw".

    I'll grab a voltmeter tonight.

    The power supply has an internal potentiometer which allows you to fine tune the voltage output.

    Take a look at the power supply. You will see a small hole just large enough for a screwdriver to fit into. Look inside for a small disc with a flat slot.

    Thanks, I'll take a look after work. I'm assuming clockwise == higher, counter-clockwise == lower?

    Depends on the unit if you look at this pic you can almost see one on the left. Look at your power supply. Some are on the sides...
