I have just received the printer and set it up. I have the sd card, i have exported gcode to the SDCard, but my printer (Robo 3d R1 Plus) will not print from it. My computer is about 10 feet away, and i have ordered a 10foot usb cable, but until then, is there not a way to print to SDCard without having a separate controller and/or usb cable?

You need to start the print job from computer (after you load it from the SD) card before you can untether and let it print on its own. Watch the getting started video, it explains how to print from the SD card. That or you get the LCD MOD or use a tablet with gcodeprintr app.

    Yup.
Without an LCD controller you have to have something that controls the printer.
If you load the GCODE (the SLICED STL) on to the card then launch the print from the PC Software you can just unplug the cable and let it print. With an LCD controller you do not even need the PC in the equation.

One word of advice, use 8.3 short names for the GCode files you put on the SD card.

OK, that is what i thought. So it sounds like I am hosed until i get the 10 foot USB cable, and at that point I won't need the SD Card.

You may not need it, but you may well want it.
Having a print die midway through due to a glitch in USB communications really sux.

Not necessarily. This is what I do, especially for stuff that will take days to print:

Load the stl file(s), export the gcode to the SD. Connect my laptop to the printer, load the SD files, print and untether. You can feasible just hold the laptop close to the printer while kicking it off- takes a couple of minutes.

Maybe OT, but since I'm a noob, perhaps one of our OG's can chime in with their wisdom- in regards to the LCD MOD, which is a cheap and apparently easy ( some tech skills required). I read somewhere that it taxes the power supply, causing it to overload?

I use the xxl riprap discount from @Printed Solid . There is a full graphics one for more money. Lots of discussions around this and tons of lcds that can be made to work. For my r1+ his was plug and play :)

I do as well and he is a member/mod here so I like supporting someone who supports our community :)

I did have to make a notch in my bottom cover to have the display in front of my robo but it look like 10 mins total to do it and the install.

Awesome, how much did it cost from him? I've been pricing the Reprap discount LCD, avoiding the XXL due to the firmware changes- but it looks like it is not required?

He has them listed in the shop as a bundle with an e3dv6 hot end or just the lcd mod

Please note that the 2004 and the XXL are electrically identical. There are no changes needed to the firmware as it is supported by default. The only difference is the physical size of the LCD. The Full Graphics LCD does need a firmware change.

The latest version of Robo's v2 for the R1+ can supposedly start a print without a PC

"The print file has to be on the SD card and it has to be called robo.gcode, to start the print you just press thex endstop once, then slide the bed back to the home position so that it holds down the y endstop"

Should be pushing through MC soon or may already be on some printers, only just heard about this this week

You do realize Marlin has had this feature all along.

I had never heard of this, no.

Figures they weren't actually adding code.

Sad part is, even if they were adding code and functionality, how much you want to bet they wouldn't create a pull request for Marlin to add it to the main code.

The fact that they hired someone capable of creating a GitHub is impressive enough. Only took them some 2 years to do it even!
