    Hi everyone

I'm printing an object for like 2 days now and still have a day and half to go. everything is going so well except for the printer is running out of filament, i don't want redo the print from the beginning. Is there a way that I can pause the printer and load more filament and then resume the printing without any problems? From my own experience, if I'm printing through a memory card and the printer is disconnected from my laptop, the printer will automatically terminate whatever its printing as soon as I reconnect it again to my laptop.

    I have the R1 Plus

    Thank y'all

Sorry to say I don't have a solution other than you could just feed another spool as soon as the last goes down but that would take some good timing. You might consider getting a LCD controller.

Maybe someone else has a workaround.

3.5 day print job, I salute you for the effort.

Probably something you should have tested before printing a 3 day print :)

What are you printing it on(laptop?) and with what software?

I would be scared to try to pause it at this point. Search on youtube I swear I have seen someone that took two ends of filament rolls and melted them together(PLA) while it was printing so that it could continue, even that had to be precise and there was some trick to it i cant remember.

I believe you took two ends one from the old spool and one from the new spool in a PTFE tubing and applied heat to it to fuse them together but again that takes good timing. Also you have the tubing to deal with at that point. Might as well just drink a lot of coffee and just feed it in when it runs out.

    • Pause the print
    • Raise the Z-Axis about 30mm
    • Load a new spool
    • Push the filament down until it comes out
    • Clean the tip and excess that just came out
    • Retract 5mm
    • Click print and it will go right back to where it was.

Simplfy3D has a 'Tool Change' feature in it.

    Thanks to all of you.

It's really frustrating. I have checked whether I have enough filament, but I never thought it will need this much. Anyway, I'm taking all the suggestions into consideration. In fact, I'm about to start practicing in joining two filaments ends.

    Prayers y'all :(o_O

You don't need to join them manually.
@PACNOR RC AEROSYSTEMS had given you an exact way to do it manually.

Most slicers will tell you a close approximation of how much filament is required to print once you slice the item. Even still if you are trying to milk every centimeter off of a spool you are going to have this happen occasionally.

I almost always know if I am going to run out before a print finishes... Granted my closest call left me with 3 inches to spare :) Not advised.

I think his problem is he has no way to pause it otherwise it would be easy. He doesn't have an LCD controller just a SD card.He unplugged the usb from the printer. If he plugs it in it will abort the print.

    Well, that explains it :)
Go forth and acquire an LCD controller !
Or leave the computer jacked in.

If routinely doing prints of that length the LCD controller is a good thing to have.

Isn't there also a command or option you can set either on Simplify3D or in g code that paused for filament being exhausted? I swear I've seen it somewhere. Mine broke last night due to still using the stock holder that comes with it. I bumped it and it started extruding in mid air.

And Marlin firmware has support for the Tunell filament sensor in it already, just needs to be enabled.
