image.jpeg Hey everybody I'm having some issues with the first layer of my prints. I only see this problem when printing at .3 or .2 layer heights .1 looks fine. Only the first layer looks like this and the rest are fine. I'm printing the first layer at 25 mm/s. Z offset is -1. Bed temp is 50c. Hot end is at 205c. Any suggestions are appreciated.

My first layer is always .3mm regardless if I am printing at .1, .2 or .3mm resolution. Are you saying you are changing the first layer height to .1, .2, .3? And is it always with the same filament that is giving the different results at the different layer heights?

I stick with the same layer height throughout the entire print. I've used 3 different types of filament with the same problem. It's only the first layer that is giving me issues. Could it be z offset?

    Naturally it could.
The logic is also that if my Z offset is mis-set by (for example) 0.01 mm then at a 0.2mm layer height it is off by 5% but at 0.1 is it off by 10% and we will not even discuss a 0.05 mm layer height :)

However, all that said, the thermal properties become more critical at finer resolutions and more importantly ... Speed.
You should drop the print speed linear with layer height (you fine tune this with experimentation -- not all printers are built the same, but that is a start).*

*drive lash starts to be a bigger issue as you get smaller

Thanks for the suggestions I will try tweaking the z offset and lower the print speed as soon as I get home.

With a small tweak to the z offset and slowing the first layer to 15mm/s everything looks nice again. Thanks for the help everyone!
