I recently upgraded my part fan to a 20CFM one to compensate for the fact I can now only fit one on my printer due to installing an IR sensor.

I tested a print for the first time today and as soon as layer 2 began and the fan came on, the hotend temperature dropped from 190C to 166C and never recovered. Extrusion stopped because of the limit in the firmware and even if it hadn't the PLA wouldn't have melted anyway.

Is there any way I can combat this? Or will I have to not run my fan at 100%?

    1) Print a new fan mount that aims the parts fan at the printed part and not at the nozzle.
    2) Buy a larger heater core. The hex has a 30w, the E3D a 25w, but a 40w core will work fine and not have the issues maintaining temperature.

P.S. I upgraded all of mine to 40w cores (they cost a couple of dollars US each on Amazon or other retailers).

I attempted to increase the temperature after it fell. The print cancelled and I got the following error message:

Damn! Yet more money to be spent. Hopefully I can get one that fits in the V6. I use the fan mount in the images below. Only the tip of the nozzle peeks below the vents.

The extruder is still not keeping up. I would do what Mark suggested and get the 40W heater core for it. In the meantime, you can lower your fan speed for now to get whatever you are printing done. Ultimately, new shroud to better direct the air and the new heater core is going to be your answer.

WOW! That new fan mount kills your Z height potential. You can mount the IR on the side of the carriage as well. That is where I have mine and still have dual fans.

It kills whatever was left alive after the cable chain! I just thought it would be good for getting airflow directly on the part since overhangs have always been terrible for me.

Okay. Ordered the E3D V6 upgrade kit that has a silicone sock and also a 40W heater cartridge. Hopefully I'll be good to go after that. I'll look in to printing a better fan shroud so I can regain some z-axis height.

Oh yeah the sock will help a lot with keeping temp and keeping clean.

While I love the E3D you could have just spent a small amount on a new heater core first :)

If you can swing it, the E3D is a fine upgrade. Good luck.

I'm already running the E3D V6 :D I haven't used the Hex hotend for years. I only bought the upgrade pack for the V6 and the 40W core.

Also, I won't need to change anything in the firmware will I?
