I fired it up and device not recognized. Hmm. I didn't hookup the LEDs just so I could run a test. What do you think k I did wrong?

Are the leds on the arduino (blue board) blinking when you plug in usb cable ?

Okay somewhat of a better sign it's trying to connect I can see com port 3 in windows, i also see ttyAMC0 in linux and the serial #, a red light blinks and green lights on the Arduino extruder fan is running, but I also noticed my bottom case fan is not running which is connected to D9. What does it mean if it's trying to connect for awhile but doesn't connect?

The case fan should be running to 12 v dc power on all the time.

Trying to connect could be a comm port issue (you cannot have any other device that uses usb open at one time)

    Could be a cable issue

Is it a new arduino or the original? Could be something hooked up incorrectly on the ramps causing an issue as well. Id start by retracing all your wiring vs the instructions.

    Yeah I I assume it's a connection I'll retrace my wires tmro.

    Original Arduino.

Would it fail to connect if a fan is not working and the white LEDs not connected? Thanks for all the help.

The case fan not connected will cause weird stuff (technical definition) so ... do not do that.

Okay I rewired my case fan and now all fans are running red light blinks when connecting but still just sits on "attempting connection" in both windows and Ubuntu. What could this possibly be? Should I remove device from MatterControl and re-add? I'm sure this has happened to someone else...

Try removing the RAMPS and connecting just to the Arduino.
In Windows delete the device from Device Manager and let it get re-added automatically.
All else fails Update the driver.

It is possible the Arduino is getting flaky, but that is not usual.

Just use this thread going forward and we will not clutter the project thread with troubleshooting
Yes, we can make this thread a permanent archive, but most are not going to have the arduino issues :)

Okay I tried removing the device in device manager and also changed com ports in advanced when readded and still sits on attempting to connect when trying to re-add in MatterControl. Comes up in device manager correctly. Tried 2 different USB cords and a powered hub still no connection. I'm at a loss.

Will MatterControl connect with no RAMPS is that what you're saying to try next?

Board looks mated fine here are some pics.

Yes, the RAMPS is all of the controls and I/O but not the communications and firmware (that is all on the Arduino).

It is possible that an issue with RAMPS is making the Arduino hang up.
However, you may just be hitting a MatterControl bug* so I would suggest trying to connect with the Arduino IDE or another GUI first (repeiter host, cura, something other than MC)

*this is not unusual and why I am not a fan of it

If you remove the ramps from the arduino can you recognize via usb?

Okay well i did power up the machine when trying to connect in MatterControl, I hope this was okay to do. I will also try connecting in other software as well later today. (repeiter host, cura)

It likely hurt nothing, you just did not need to do it :)
If you are talking to the Arduino it is powered by the USB.
You need to remember that if (for some reason) you want to reboot the Arduino or work on it...
You have to unplug the USB to totally kill power to it.

So if it recognizes and connects to the arduino something is wrong on the ramps side (connections or the ramps itself)

Okay like I said in the other thread (http://community.robo3d.com/index.p...and-rewiring-to-make-generic-ramps-work.8356/) I did not connect the white LEDs because I wanted to make sure all my other connections worked first so I will try and rewire from step one tonight and also connect the LEDs.

I purchased the RAMPS from amazon new with these stepper motor drivers maybe just maybe its the stepper drivers?
