I am always looking for ways to make money using my 3D printer and harry posted this link and it seems like a great idea that someone could do locally.

My question is what would be the best software to use for this? I would like to play with this idea... maybe get one of my friends 3D sonograms and see if it is possible.

    On the expensive side:

    Cheaper end:

I know I've seen a lot of stuff either using Kinects or the older concept of using red laser and a webcam to do point cloud capture.

Most of the ones I've seen there is a still a lot of clean up needed afterwards.

I suspect the sonogram is easier as it is really getting 3d cloud points that is being rendered in 2d space. So if you have those points you can just convert it to the right format and import it into 3d cloud software (which I have no reference to commercial ones off hand).
