Hi I purchased the hobby components XXL display this week that works perfectly http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=131120494430 but it's a slightly different layout to the other reprap ones so I have made my very first ever 3d model - a new case :)

For some reason the scale is off on my drawings by a factor of 10x but this is fixed my setting the scale to 10 Repetier. I'm not sure why this did this I'll fix it tomorrow. You can download the files and print them out now as I said with your scale adjusted.

I will do a second version tomorrow with a mounting bracket possibly adjustable.

    Here are my three files

    Any sugguestions/feedback/tips would be welcome

    Thanks

    Brian

Hi I used TurboCAD it's what was affordable at my local store £80 I think, I've never modelled anything before so there will be a version 2 when I've learned how to use the software a bit better. It took me maybe 6-8hrs from never doing it before to produce that case (a couple of hours watching YouTube videos) I think I could do it quicker now I have learned the software a little. I didn't use any extrude functions (they're pretty limited unless you have the pro version which is very expensive) just 3D cut and 3D add pretty much did it. I will make modified version with the button side lower and then maybe make it look a bit more aesthetically pleasing (round it off a bit).

When you say update the RAMPS firmware are you on about the main Arduino board as I downloaded the Feb 14th Firmware already from that thread an flashed it or do you means something additional? Just checking the RAMPS circuit diagram I assume you mean the main board I flashed mine with http://forums.robo3dprinter.com/index.php?attachments/marlin_2_4_14-zip.2252/ the first post from Coby is this the correct one?

Oh yeah I started off my making an accurate model of the display which I measured over and over and once I had the display model I built the case around it so I didn't have to worry too much about the case measurements as the display was accurate then the case would be fine. So I also have a 3D model of the display if anyone wants it. There are some changes I will make to the case later this week it think I didn't allow too much room for variation so it might be a tight fit for anyone else so I will add a tiny bit of room to holes etc to allow a little bit of play.

Yes, you have the newest version. Yes, the firmware is on the Arduino. The RAMPS board is just an I/O shield for the Arduino. No processor on it.

Nice job for your first design. Sketchup Make is free and does extrudes. It does most of what the professional version does except for Boolean operations. Autodesk has free student versions of Autocad, 3DS Max and Mesh Mixer. I don't know how they compare to Turbocad.

For the LCD case check out the XXL LCD case on thingaverse. You may be able to reuse the knob for your display.

Cool thanks for the verification I tinker with arduinos a bit and assumed you meant the main board. Thanks for the pointers about software, autocad is very much like turbocad and 3DS Max is very much like blender which is free (imo it's the most professional piece of free software across any catagory that I have ever seen it has a step learning curve though) the only thing with blender etc is they feel much more like animation modelling packages whereas turbocad and autocad are technical drawing programs which appeals much more to my brain. I will definitely give mesh mixer a go as well as sketchup.

My display came with a knob for the rotary push switch I assumed they all did which is I didn't make one I can add one though for people that need one. I've been thinking today about how I can improve in loads of ways so there will definitely be a version 2.

    Thanks for the pointers

    Regards

    Brian

I printed a nice red colorfab knob and kill switch!

My kids and I had problems getting started with the Blender GUI. Mesh mixer is more for organic modeling not dimension exact things like cases but it is pretty neat and easy to use.
