HI , i am an old member but had to create a new profile. locked out of password reset.

So I decided to start over with octoprint since I had neglected it and it became so old it couldn't be updated.

well I started getting problems. it would preheat but turn off the heat when I pressed print.
I was able to start a print in safe mode.
a file also printed fine when disconnecting the octo print and using the sd card slot on the machine.

over at the octoprint FB page.
i got a comment about my cura 4.0 being very outdated as well.
so I installed the new version 4.9.1.

well, it didn't xyz cube.jpg correct the problem on turning off the heat when I hit print.
but it did create a new problem. print quality is horrible in safe mode and sd card slot.
it inverted the recessed letters on a calibration cube.

so now I am trying to figure why cura slicer isn't working
    any help would be great.

Give me your old username and I can perhaps unlock it.

    I can't comment on Cura -- not a user.

You can update the octoPi image by simply downloading the image to a PC and burning that to an SD card* and then swap that in the Pi you are using. I assume this is an R1/R1+ since that it where you posted this... once you swap the SD card then just configure OctoPi for the R1+ and you should be good.

*I'd say use a new SD card and keep the old one as a backup in case you have issues.

OK, like I cautioned -- not a Cura user -- but that almost looks like it is trying to generate support material inside the lettering (the Y for example). Maybe make sure that generation of supports is turned off.

Your edges/corners look a bit sloppy and that is usually :
    1) Slightly loose belt or a loose drive cog on a stepper shaft
    2) Too much acceleration / jerk (these can be slowed down in the firmware or via the EEPROM)

I'd guess that one or more of the following are issues:

    1) Printing a bit too hot and/or too slow (causing the printed filament to warp/melt after extrusion)
    2) Not enough top/bottom/side layers (I assume that was the top?)

Check your slicer settings for the thickness of the shell and number of top/bottom layers. You want at least 1mm of external shell generally speaking (so a 0.2mm layer height you would want 5 layers)

I think I am making progress. thaks for your help.
but for every step forward I seem to be taking a step back.
I was trying to print a new cube with 5 top layer and at a cooler temp.
    feeling good.
but now the extruder gear isnt turning. the print head is moving as if it were printing but no filament is being extruded.

I started a print at 180. no movement on the extruder gear.
I raised the temp to 200 and it stared to print.
i havent used this printer in a while but I think i do remember printing at 180.

anyway I haven used the lcd display since getting my old version of octoprint installed.
    what is Auto temp?

it was off and had a min temp of 200 and max of 250

well i figured out that it wont print unless 190. added a fifth top layer.
but I am still getting holes and overall poor results compared to what I printed yestarday.
    I wish I had never upgraded cura and octoprint z 5 layer.jpg yesterday.jpg yesterday.jpg

It is not likely related to OctoPrint ... that just prints the sliced models. I'd suggest trying a different slicer -- there are a lot of alternatives. Many of them are free (like Cura).

    Well, here is a list:

    https://all3dp.com/1/best-3d-slicer-software-3d-printer/

Since 2014 I have tried all of them, but I only use Simplify3D for my FDM printers and Chitubox for my resin printers.
I would encourage you to try all of the free ones before spending money on one. Many of the free ones are decent and if one isn't working, then try another.
