Well, neither Makerbot nor anyone associated with Makerbot did anything close to inventing the 3D printer. They just took open designs and commercialized them. Bre Pettis turned out to be more master salesman than any kind of innovator. Of course I do not begrudge him any of the monies that he made off the open source community and he is not part of Makerbot anymore. I just think Makerbot's time has come and gone.

I would look at MakerBot not as a car manufacturer but more of a car model. Like Chrysler, Pontiac, Yugo, Dolorian...

All of those are (or were) car manufacturers, not models.

Chrysler Pacifica (and tons of other cars), Pontiac GTO (and tons of other cars, though the GTO was designed by DeLorean), Yugo GV (and a bunch of variations on the model), DeLorean DMC-12 (nice typo for that name though, given how sad that guy's life was at the end).

Adams-Farwell, Apperson, Baker Electric, CarterCar, etc... the list goes on for quite a ways :)
There were a LOT of US car manufacturers in those early days.

They might not be models but they didn't invent the car either. Like makerbot they're just a company that built on others ideas. Cut off one head and two will takes its place. Hail 3d printing!
