I've had my R1 for a few weeks and I love it! Going through the forums I've read alot of interseting things about the E3D v6 extruder. I like the idea of switching out different size nozzles. So, would it be a good idea to switch out the installed extruder for the E3D v6 or is this a bad idea?

Not a bad idea, great extruder. Can't say of you NEED it or not :)
There are some advantages to it so that may make it worth the trouble and cost.

(full disclaimer both robos in my house have one)

In my opinion it's a great idea after your warranty or if you want to run oversized filament or flexible material.

Just an FYI you can use e3d v6 nozzles on the hexagon :)

Yea its probably not needed, I upgraded mine after I bunged up the stock one a few times.

    Its a great option though.
