Solved Extruder motor grinding on retraction only...extrudes correctly

    As the title says...i have an old machine that extrudes fine and i can get decent prints but every now and then on retraction the extruder motor makes a grinding noise...anyone got a clue what the deal is?

    Either try bumping the current from the stepper driver for the extruder a bit and see if that helps (or swap the driver for a new one).
    If that doesn't help it is likely the stepper failing.

    Mark you suggested bumping up the voltage on the driver a little i believe...what should that voltage read on a multimeter?

    So here is what i have tried.
    1. Bump up the voltage .1v...still grinding
    2. Swap the extruder and another driver...still grinding.

    All i can think is that it must be the motor. Will this motor work?

    at 65oz-in it is way stronger than the stock one so assuming the size is right for your extruder motor (it should be, but measure it to be sure you have a 42mm body on yours) then it will work fine.

    Swapping the driver for another motor was a good way to test it. I'd say at this point you have a failing stepper.
    You MAY have to adjust the stepper driver current when you install the new one, or maybe not :)

    Its a moot question... the printer just went up in flames :( at least i was watching it when it happened.

    Well that was non-standard :( Hope you didn't have any other damage.
    and the exact reason I have a smoke detector controlled power strip powering my printers ...

    Just for proof i'm not full of it...there was no other damage. I picked it up and tossed it out the front door. Like i said im glad i was watching it.
