So i was printing last night when i came in to find the locking nut on my hobbed bolt tightened up and locked everything up. After finding a new locking nut and fixing everything it spins free by hand but when i try extruding the motor makes a grinding noise and doesn't turn. I switched out the stepper with my other printer and it does the same thing. What did i screw up? Overheat the Arduino board?

Maybe the driver for E on the Ramps. Check that out and maybe swap it to see if it is bad.

If it is the ramps or the arduino then they are cheap and available on Amazon with prime. The stepper drivers are available as well. Probably can get the all three for less than $57.

You can shop around to find the best deal or review.

Also, if you are swapping out, make sure they are the same components. Not sure if your other printer is built with the same steppers and drivers or not. If suggest swapping E with X if needed for a check.

yeah then you don't have to worry about rewiring the board since you don't have the custom ramps that comes with the R1+

Robo uses clone electronic components as well. Not a true arduinio from Italy.

Do you know how to test your stepper drivers?

Then you essentially have an R1+
R1 plus Leadscrew upgrade is an R1+ in effect.

Yes, but without the new Ramps board configuration. So if needed to get a new Ramps he won't need to do any wiring acrobatics.

Cool, thanks guys. Ordered that kit and some stepper drivers. Can't get them until Tuesday so i'll see what i can do then. Hopefully this other printer stays reliable in the mean time.

I actually have a whole arduino-ramps-driver stack sitting on my desk locked an loaded with my latest firmware ready to go just in case I ever get caught with an issue with it. So far no problem. I am sure if I didn't have that my board would have fried months ago. :)
