    Hello,

I am currently facing an issue where at a certain Y location I consistently have extruder stalls. Everything works perfectly except this one spot, about 1cm wide, where the extruder will always click and not extrude. It happens across firmware versions and Ive tried editing the usual culprits for stalling in Simplify3D. I know the hotend is not clogged from visual inspection, and no part of the rails appear damaged. This error in printing occurs front to back along the entire print!

    Thank you for your help.

Is this really the R1/R1+ or something else?

Is it always the same model or all models? If it’s same print sounds like maybe slicing? Try reslicing it?

This is the R1+ with Auto Bed Leveling, bought off Amazon.
It is regardless of model. It could be a simplify3D issue, and I will test this. Possibly if I use Cura, it may go away?

Sounds like the extruder is too close to the bed in that position/line. Have you tried adjusting the Autoleveling Z offset (the M565 command)? Simplify will require you to add this to your startup GCode script.

Even with the extruder lifted from the bed it stalls in that position, which is why I find it especially confusing. Even after switching to Cura, refreshing stock firmware, and then taking off the secondary glass bed I use over the stock bed (stock bed has chips missing) I STILL get the extrusion issue. It runs all the way up the part in that specific area too!

Is it retraction then? Maybe the clicks are retraction?

    Is it trying to extrude?

With the extruder off the bed the X/Y position is meaningless to the extruder actually extruding. There is nothing in the X/Y when it is "off the bed" that would affect extrusion. Only thing I can imagine is the filament feed getting hung.

It is trying to extrude, because even turning off Retraction in Simplify3D does absolutely nothing to remedy the issue. Could it be the stepper driver? I accidentally shorted the hot end fan wires while connecting a Noctua Fan briefly, could this have damage the driver board slightly?

In addition, upon feeling the motor torque during these "hang-ups" where it clicks, it feels as though it suddenly loses all of its toque In that spot, as if it is not receiving power. Normally, I'd expect a bad driver IC to function poorly universally if bad, but I am at wit's end.

Sure the stepper driver is as likely a cause as anything if it is the motor not turning or not having enough torque, I just do not see how that would generate a failure at the same X/Y coordinates every time :) Unless there is more backpressure at that point (i.e. Z is too low) then it makes sense.

Otherwise I would expect i to fail in many places

could be the cable to the stepper. Lift the gantry up, extrude filament and wiggle them wires around. See if you can mimmick the issue.

Sounds like a good idea. I will try that as soon as I get home from work.

@Geof Your idea was correct! Jostling the 4 wire leads on the Stepper caused the horrible grinding sound. That solved the issue pretty simply, I have a poor mechanical connection. Now the task is finding a replacement cable.

Should be able to google nema 17 cable and get plenty of variety. I think the last batch of premade ones I bought came from amazon

Just be aware there are 4 wire and 6 wire variety and IIRC Robo uses the 4 wire on the R1 series
