I have received an R2 for Christmas. I have updated the OS; I am curious as to whether or not I should have the current firmware release already on there. I tried viewing the firmware version that is already installed via octoprint but it says "Error retrieving information from printer". I'm hesitant to do it as it will reset everything to defaults. Is there a way to manually view what's installed from the touchscreen? If not, does anybody know when the current firmware version was initially released?

My guess is that you have whatever version of the firmware that was originally released. If your LCD says an upgrade / update is available then do it.

I don't have a super strong comp sci background. I had thought the firmware and the OS updates were different. The manual seems to distinguish between updating firmware and updating the OS. Is this not the case?

They are different but the update mechanism checks both.
