I'm running an R1 + with an LCD controller. I've noticed that whenever I print a model, the first layer doesn't extrude. However, subsequent layers come out fine. I'm using a layer height of .25 and the LCD says the z-offset is set to .8 (which I assume means that z will start .8 mm about the bed). This should be plenty of room for the initial .25 layer, however, nothing extrudes on the first layer. How do I calibrate the z-axis start position?

One way I've gotten around this is to use a raft, but that's a wasteful solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your nozzle is too close to the bed and simply can't extrude.

Change the Z offset you are using in the startup GCode (The M565 command) to a more negative number to raise it up from the bed more.

Does a negative number tell it to go above the bed? It's currently a positive .8

Yep. Negative is up and away from the bed and positive is (technically) below the bed.

thanks. that's probably the issue then. it's trying to go below the bed on the first layer. I'm at work now, but I'll give that a try tonight. thanks again

I flashed v2 of the firmware and that seems to have solved the problem.

Unlikely since v2 does almost nothing :) but just reflashing it may have helped.
