.dxf should work with inventor fusion, since .dxf was created by autodesk. I`m using this http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/ to view and convert the .stl. I will play around with it more later, too tired right now D:

Hey guys, I just downloaded them all as well
what format do you need them in I can export in quite a few.
    What's the best one?

Jeff, What are you working in? If we're doing mechanical design type work, we should all be working in a CAD neutral format. stp/step/igs/iges. If everyone else would rather stick with inventor or solid works format, I can handle those as well.

Oddly enough, since 2D dxf is a great neutral format, 3D dxf has no published standard so it is extremely difficult to work with across multiple programs.

I think DWG or STEP files would work best for me.

I like it.. Definatly think we should do a wood build though. Maybe 1/2" MDF? This will dampen the sound greatly and we could paint it to give a good finish.

I found this while looking for CNC plans and i think the style would look nice wherever you decide to put it. It is built out of wood and painted. http://www.momuscnc.com/index.html

I think we should have a fan to circulate the air to keep the temp even within the chamber. I think we should have an automatic way to control the air temp via a thermostat censor and exhaust vent or fan too. This way we don't have to babysit large prints and we don't run the risk of the chamber getting to hot and damaging the printer.

These are the features I think we need:
    -circulating fan
    -automatic internal temp control system
    -large window and door
-VIKI or other LCD control mounting location

What do you guys think? What features do you want?

I am using solidworks and I only mentioned it because I saw all the formats it can use and make and if anyone had difficulties I could possibly convert something to help out I saw that some software was very limited to its output formats

@Jeff, unless you've purchased some ad-ons solidworks can't import 3D dxf or stl files. It can export them though.

Here is a part I created in solidworks
and attached as a zip file forum would not let me uplaod the direct .STL file
can you try and open this one
    it should be tangle.STL

ah, I thought that it couldn't handle stls. I wonder if you have a special add-on or if I was just completely blind when I tried it? I'm hoping the latter. It will be useful to have access to capabilities to convert STL to solid format. I'm curious to hear how well it does. Everything I've read says that importing mesh files to solids is problematic.

The DXF import option is deceiving. It CAN import DXF, but is uses the 2D standard, so it doesn't really do a meaningful import for our purposes. I guess that doesn't really matter if you can handle the STLs!

Try that tangle STL and see if it works for you. It is a simple toy you just make several of these say 20-40 and connect them to each other and they twist and turn in about every direction Anyway that is how it is supposed to work I haven't tested it yet of course but it is simply a 90 degree curve piece not sure if I got the whole in the one side correct as I am still VERY new to solidworks. It should simply snap together the snap should be very tight but was snapped it is loose enough to spin around. Kind of fun to play with as a nicknack I could see these things given away as company promotions at job faires and such just add you corporate logo and you are done.
They already exist in the real world but it would make a good 3d printer project and the builds time would be relatively short even if you did 40 at a time. If it works maybe you can print a couple and tell me if I got the hole correct.

maybe you could print a couple and see if they actually snap together

If you do I want to see a picture as it is my first drawing turned to real life

@Jeff: now I remember the issue with SolidWorks and STL. It imports them, but not as a solid. So, you see the object on your screen, but it doesn't recognize any features so you can't actually do anything to it. Not sure if this was just an issue with the specific STLs I tried or if it has to do with the way SW does the import.

Try importing some STLsand then adding a hole or something.

Could someone export the Upper & Lower RoBo shell to a STEP file? I'm wanting to start working on a heat chamber design but still don't know the dimensions of RoBo... Also does anyone know how far the X&Y axis move outside the body?
