Is there an aftermarket alternative to the filament sensor for the R2?

while I love the idea of detecting filament and pausing the print, the cheaply sourced switches that Robo chose for the filament sensor just plain suck.
The fact that Robo tells you to disable the plugin irritates me.
When it was functioning, the sensor was saving quite a few prints, especially since I like to prototype my designs using rolls or remaining filament (with various “scraps” left over from othe jobs).
Is there an aftermarket alternative that I can wire up to the R2? I imagine it is just a switch.

It is, and the best ones are simple, cheap mechanical switches (not IR) :)
