I cannot print the parts required for the swap out. My current extruder's temperature falls during print. What I am wondering is could I print in PLA, swap out, print in PETG and then swap the parts out. Would the PLA last long enough for the print on the new extruder?

Sure. Other than the hotend itself none of the parts get hot enough to matter (certainly not short term).

i just did the E3DV6 .... you can leave it as PLA in fact. When set up with proper cooling that part of the hot end is cold anyhow. I can hold my finger on the heatsink while its printing and its cold.

My whole X-carriage and Wade's is Hatchbox Glow-in-the-dark PLA. I've had no problems at all.
