As a side note: those jumpers control the amount/size of micro-stepping the board can/will do... so sort-of important.

I think I must be blind cause I can't see any jumpers on your pic. 1a, 1b, VDD, or GND. Well I'm glad it seems to be a simple issue.

Oh you mean they all have jumpers gotcha! I will be back at the printer in about 45 min and I'm hopeful that this should do it cause usually missing a bunch of pieces would cause issues lol.

So besides that I think that I have the x and y switched around there is improvement. The noise is greatly reduced and the y (responding to the x) works pretty well but not as well as it once did. Still nothing from the z axis though and the x may move but only in millimeters. Should I now be using the voltage controllers that came with the kit, the red ones?

I started this threat at the same time I emailed the e3d people and they responded yesterday and recommended me try different ducts for the fan; if only they saw this thread now.

Id suggest you get the wires where they go then yes the adjustment on the drivers. Its possible the z went bad but doubtful.

All wires should be good now. Is it worth it to get the multi meter out and do the math and see the output on those controllers or should I just do quarter turn and check and repeat till I I get to 2 full turns?

I'd use the meter and set the reference voltage. Best way to be sure.
The pots are not super accurate.

To save me from doing math early, what voltage are you guys getting across your controllers?

So is it worth it to do the whole bread board and PSU stuff or can i get by with a multimeter and a USB plug?

You can do it with nothing more than the meter and stepper to drive. I just disconnected the boards mechanically and pulled them out enough to get at them then used the steppers on the printer as my test. I went for a combo approach where I set the voltages and then watched the steppers to make sure they were stepping well. If I thought it needed it I bumped it a fraction.

If you run it at max current the downside is that the stepper will run hot so you want enough current to reliably make the stepper work, but not a lot extra.
