I am working on @hphaseAZ 's printer and his Z axis is printing short, and quality was not too great. I checked the firmware multiple times for E and Z-steps, both were already correct. Next I checked the driver, working perfectly. The cause of this issue was a malfunctioning cooling fan cooling the RAMPS board.

The problem's result is on the right, getting worse and worse, the hotter the printer got. The print on the left is after the cooling fan was fixed. I highly advise to check fans, before getting more involved.

Thank YOU! I'm amazed of what this printer can do now!

Can confirm, my control board fan was not wired correctly and my 20cm calibration cubes were consistently coming out at 17mm high with terrible quality. Reversing the wire and confirming that the fan is now running and now I have a 20cm cube :)

    Thank you @Marquis
