Received a warranty replacement "Acrylic Middle Plate Black" today. Does anyone have any idea what the slot that is circled in the picture is for?

For the newer models with the new bed that is where the heater wires come up from the bottom.

How new are we talking on this, because the R1+ I've got still has the wires fed out of a slot in the back of the case.

Also, I like how this piece looks like it was ripped right out of the milling machine and sent along with only a cursory sanding to remove sharp edges on the milled slot.

Well, when I did the bed upgrade on one of my old Beta units that is what they sent with instructions on routing the wires through it.
    I don't have an R1 or R1+ to compare to :)

And that upgrade was nigh-on a year ago by now.
I assumed that this was the direction they were going with newer models.

On the R1 I have and the R1+ both, that massive slot is not there and the wires for the heated bed go thru the vents on the back of the case and loop around to hook onto the glass bed.

Interesting. The only downside to this plate and routing was that I had to make sure I use ties and anchors to route the wires such that they stay out of the way. Their approach might be easier to route things.

@daniel871 I liked your post because I did not want to post a "Me too" just to up my already too high post count. ;)

Of course I haven't been here as long as @mark tomlinson either. :)

I actual think I recall @Nathanfish replacing his acrylic plate with an aluminum one.

I like how @donhuevo basically took the Robo's guts and used them to make a printer with an extruded aluminum frame altogether.

This is what is currently in place. Will a large slot that was obviously cut or maybe just sanded by a previous owner compromise the middle plate or the stability of the machine?

Is there a crack or twist somewhere I'm not seeing? Or was this picture taken before whatever catastrophic thing happened to the original?

Not likely. That plate still looks plenty solid. It is not highly stressed structural component :)

Should I proceed with using the replacement?

It should be fine, but since this is a warranty replacement I would get them to sort it as damaged in shipping.
You could just epoxy the crack if you really wanted to use it, but since this is a warranty item they need to make it right.

Get it touch with them and provide the pictures.

Sorry there has been a mix up up here.
The plate with the slot is the warranty replacement and the one with the crack(s) where the z smooth rod is mounted is the old one.

Ah yeah, ok. I had a similar crack on my original R1 when printing parts for that CES contest that won the R1+ (except mine went over to where the Y-axis motor mounted).

I don't think that slot will hurt anything directly, just keep in mind that if you ever drop anything under the glass bed it's going to go through that hole like it's a magnet.

Maybe I'll epoxy a section of acrylic I have left over from an enclosure to "demagnetize" that area just in case.
