Got my RepRap XXL board mounted last night. Found out after a 4-hour print that the backing plate on Thingiverse for the Robo 3D LCD_Bottom.STL http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:219362/#files does not work well with the latest version of the R1. Part of it gets in the way of the bed y-axis travel.

So I then printed this back-plate Bottom_Case_XXL_Pockets.STL http://www.thingiverse.com/download:183466 which fits-up nice and with some band-sawing on the other plate to clear the y-axis and some 3M industrial double-sided tape, I ended-up with this arrangement which I really like:

I see you use the same hairspray as I do. How does it work for you?

I also use the same hairspray and it has been working good for me, all the prints are sticking and nothing is coming up.

Here's a closeup of the XXL case, which I think printed very nice at low resolution .3mm using CuraEngine. The aluminum knob is from Jameco, a spare I had from a recent project (Vacuum Tube Stereo Studio Preamp which I built) .....I like the quality feel of these knobs. That's the ambient temp of the shop with the A/C running, shown on the display.

I've seen someone extend the wires enough to mount it top center on the lid.

I'm trying to remember. He didn't just extend the wires, that probably wouldn't work. He bought new cables.

This is the problem I run into a lot "That one person did that one thing, but hell if I remember who"

could you post a photo of the side profile? I'd like a better look at the back piece and how it's mounted

@Ziggy tested longer cables IIRC (like you, I know it was someone)

You just have to get a little creative with the hacksaw, epoxy and double-sided tape;)

Given Ziggys advice I extended my cables to 25" so I could reposition the XXL to the upper front of the printer. The signals did not look bad at all. I looked at the SPI clock and data inputs to the SD card. Before the buffer they had a bit of ringing as expected but it was within spec for the buffer and after the buffer they looked perfect. The data output from the SD card is a lot harder to scope out at the Arduino but I'll try to look at it the next time I have the printer on it's side. The 5V supply level at the XXL looked fine.

The case looks pretty good in black and white mounted on the top with velcro. It is out of the way and can be put in the original box after cutting a bit of the foam away. I like the colorfab red knob.

    Here is the cable routing.

I edited the case bottom to add a slot for the cables.

I'm thinking to buy this LCD but is this necessary? Can I setup the slicing parameters with this LCD?

You can only change most slicing parameters within the slicer, but the LCD will allow you to make some adjustments through the print.

Among them: temperature, speed, extrusion rate (the rate in your slicer adjusted by a percentage on the LCD), and acceleration.
