I am a real newbie but if I don't have a LCD controller, just a new R1+ that I purchased private party that had never been used. Why would I want to install Marlin as compared to using the firmware that came with it?

    You misconstrue :)

Marlin is the firmware that came with it. Just what came stock is an older version (1.0.x -- can't remember the exact version).
Marlin is the software in the printer, the slicer for the PC is whichever you choose.

You should NOT upgrade the firmware on a working printer unless there is a specific new feature of that firmware you want to take advantage of.
