I got my R1 last May, and have been using it almost nonstop since. Initially I had some issues with it. Bad ribbing, it would not print large item at all (bigger than about 20 x 20 x 20mm), and other issues that just kept adding to others, and it finally went back to the factory for a look-see. When it came back, it has been working flawlessly ever since. A quick test print of a 20mm cube got me within .1mm on all sides. I was a happy camper.

One of the first large pieces I did was an 18 in tall Vinis de Milo in 9 parts, all at fine resolution, 2 perimeters, 25%fill and on a ramp. After she was all glued up, I spend about 10 minutes with some Acetone and she looks like polished Marbel now.

I started the updates by adding an XLLCD and printing the feet and modified mounting box for it. Next came a tool holder, then a couple of spool holders to go on top of the case. That was about it for a while, but the fan noise got a bit much and the cable hanging from the top along with the annoying blue light and need for additional lighting got to be too much. Next up was the Quick Change Filament adapter (thing 889541). This made filament changes much easier. I also changes out the extruder gears with the Herringbone gears (thing 760093) at the same time.

The next thing up was a 25 to 40mm adapter for the hot end fan (thing 1124054). Not a bad option, but you loose 10mm from your y print area. My first concern was the close proximity of the fan to the print bed, but it turned out not to be a problem. I later found a Dual fan mount for the HEX extruder (thing 871343) that had a 30mm fan. I printed it, and then took a 30mm to 40mm adapter (sorry, I can't find the thing number again) and printed it, but first changed the Z height to 5mm and printed it 40mm side down. This was cleaned up and the inside ares polished with Acetone then glued to the extruder mount. The 40mm fan was then attached to this with bolts on the bottom, and a piece of all purpose miracle(duct) tape on the top as the clearance is very tight. The adapter was installed along with the E3Dv6 Quick Release Plate printed at 4.2mm thickness.Everything fit like a glove. I got my 10mm back on the y side of the priint bed, got rid of teh noisy 25mm fan, got the quick release for the hot end and got the ability to add dual cooling fan should I ever decide to do it. I print mostly with ABS so don't use the fans now anyway. Next up came the cable chain and mount. I went with the quick install version(thing 1154650) with the extruder mount on the side of the stepper motor. After all the links and mounting parts were printed installation was quick and neat. Excess wires were fed back into the empty space below the printer.

Somewhere during all this, I picked up a 39inch LED light strip. It was cut into 5 strips with 15 lights in each. I spaced two sections so that one was at the top offset to one side and the other then would run down the side stopping about even with the tops of the Z brackets. I wired in an simple ST switch . The other two sections were wired the same and were going to go on the opposite side of the cover. when the time came, I cut the wires for the Blue lights added spade connectors and then taped the light strings inside the cover of the printer and plugged the spade connectors in. I now have plenty of white light inside the printer case. I also have the option to turn the lights off if I want to, like when doing long over night prints, or watching TV while printing and not wanting all the bright lights.

I also drew up a 60mm fan holder that would screw to the bottom of the printer case and hold the fan sime through the hole. This way, it would not protrude any further into the bottom that the existing 40mm fan. I just cut a 60.2mm hole where I wanted to position the fan. took the old noisy fan out. Plugged the new fan in and screwed the bottom plate back in place. The new fan is much quieter than the old one and provides a lot more air over the ramps. If any one is interested, email me direct (john@huggins1.com) and I will send you the .stl for the adapter.

Yet to come will be the brass liner bearings for the X and Y axis. Maybe some day I may go for the new Z-rods, but not right now.

Go to http://imgur.com/a/CKOmK to see pics of the printer upgrades and http://imgur.com/a/JkoSY to see pics of Vinus and the Winged Victory. The Winged Victory was done when I first got the printer and was having the ribbing problems. What is there is after a lot of filing, sanding and Acetone wore work, and it still isn't smooth. The parts didn't fit all that well either. The Vinus fit like a glove and only took a few minutes of brushing with Acetone to get a smooth finish. Worlds of difference.

The Winged Victory was the first large piece I tried when I first got the printer. Lots of ribbing problems that have been resolved. The last pic is the current project. i am starting over in Red for the tower, and with the help of some NASA blueprints, will be adding a lot of what was missing or incorrect from the original. It is also being rescaled from 1/60 to 1/72 to go with the rest of my model collection.
