Looking for a little guidance here.

I recently bought a Robo3D R1 used... I had some decent luck printing things at first, although not what I considered perfect.

I wasnt too concerned, but then I took the time to put a Smart Controller XXL on it, as well as had to rebuild the octiprint setup that came with it.

Now... my prints are rather course (and were totally unstable until I switched filaments).

Attached are a couple of pics from my latest print, which at least held it together, and is viable. Just not the quality I would expect.

This is supposed to be a basic cube.

You have a loose drive component in at least one axis (X or Y, can't say which since there is no point of reference) maybe both.
This has been discussed a lot in the forum and it is a loose belt or a loose drive cog on a motor shaft (they have set screws and they get loose).

A used printer should be completely gone over (all belts and drives) since you really don't know how it was maintained.

Ok - I guess I am mostly confused as it was reasonably ok prior to flipping the printer onto its back to install the Smart Controller LCD.

Prints prioer to doing the install where textured, but consistant.

I guess I will start poking around to try to find something loose...

Check belt tension and set screws on the timing pulleys. If you have loctite it's a good time to use it on those set screws

You should check the Z switches, but the symptoms don't really point to that being the cause.

So I have looked over everything, cleaned the nozzle, checked connections, etc.

    Problem still exists...

Seems that things start to go crazy after about layer 8 or 9, and never recover.... Pretty much when it switches to Infill.

I even reset my settings in matter control and output a new file.

Very confused, frustrated. It was printing decent before...

It is consistant if nothing else!

this last round I unhooked the 12-5v converter I was using to power the pi, and LED lights I added. Thinking maybe it was causing some sort of interference.

This was printed using the SD card in teh Smart Controller...

    I am at a loss....

Have you updated the firmware at all?

Those could be the symptoms of incorrect firmware. It is easy to get the wrong version in there.

I have not touched the firmware.

I just tried a different print - it was a file left on the SD card by the previous owner. It was printing fine, up until a Temperature Fall Fail error.

Begining to wonder if I have a temp sensor issue.

I found the temp fall issue was a loose connection that is now fixed.

I posted on the facebook group, but updating here too...

I have checked several things looking at the mechanics, etc. belt tension, loose couplers, etc. I have not found anything obvious.

I verified firmware version, and even updated it again just to make sure it was a clean version.

I had a successful print of a 10mm cube... but nothing else has been able to print properly. Yellow cubes in the attached pics were previous to my upgrades and problems.

The symptoms you have could be an incorrect version of the firmware loaded (because your Z steps look horrid).
If you have an R1 and not an R1+ (and not an older Beta) then please make sure you loaded the R1 firmware.
In fact, point us to the exact one you used so we can confirm that.

Be certain you know EXACTLY which printer you have as well ... the beta, the R1 and the R1+ all look very similar (but mechanically they are not and need different firmware).

If that wasn't complicated enough there are even two flavors of R1 out there although the odd-ball one is quite rare ...

I used this firmware as highlighted in the attached image.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the R1, I was told specifically its not a Plus... and it has the factory Z rod supports, and auto level, thus not a Beta. Also - it is the firmware that was on it originally too when it did work previous.

The odd thing is.... the close up cube... it printed great for so far, then just lost it..

That is a great suggestion and would explain the failure halfway through

Thats your issue. Wire it to 12v.

It was plugged into the controller board originally..... (when I got it) I would assume i can grab 12v right there?

Certainly would explain all my failure since I had the bottom off the first time!
