I have seen many places that offer clear filament for 3d printers. What does this end up looking like.
It can't be like those nice acrylic box you see everywhere, can it?

Anyone have some pictures of what clear looks like when printed?

I've heard clear PLA can come out translucent if printed with a thin enough wall, too much heat and it will turn yellow. As far as I know even poly-carbonate will not come out totally clear due to the way the printer prints and imperfections.

From what I have seen online Michael is correct. Object will be translucent but not perfectly clear because of the way the printer lays down layers.

    Hi

Maybe it will be clear or at least more clear when it's treatet with acetone. Prints usualy look matt but after they're shiny. So I think the treatment makes the surface really smooth. After a print it seems that there are a lot of imperfections which scatters the light and then it seems to be white but clear (like a cloud in the sky).

Would be cool if someone tried this once.

Treating with acetone will only help if it ABS. acetone won't effect PLA.

this is crytal clear abs. they say "print fast and lower temperature" to get it more clear. It also depends on enviroment, layer height and geometry.
For me it looks like it depends also on the angle of view, from the side it's white, from top pretty clear...[IMG]

That appears to act like a "scrim" in theater parlance. If there is more light from within, it is more clear but if there is more light from the outside, it appears more opaque. Interesting lighting opportunity...
Also, Taulman has a new filament that can get quite clear, though nowhere in even the same ballpark as glass. Here's the link: http://taulman3d.com/news.html

@Harry. I love using the XT on my ultimaker and it is pretty transparent when printed with no infill.
Unfortunately, not available in 1.75 yet! sorry guys.

This is probably a mean tease since it's still not available in 1.75mm, but I'm going to go ahead and do it because it's just cool and perhaps some of you also have 3mm printers.

Turns out the XT, which prints reasonably transparent anyways, can be vapor polished with acetone. It is trickier to get it just right. It also increases flexibility a ton at least for a few days.

Some other things that I (and others) have played around with:
Dying with RIT dye (i.e. the RichRap trick with nylon)
using it as a support material in dualstrusion. Interface between this material and PLA is extremely weak.

I wrote about it at my blog here:
    http://www.printedsolid.com/vapor-polishing-colorfabb-xt/

Here's a pic of my favorite test print, the Emmett Stretchy Bracelet, vapor polished in acetone. This is 1 layer thick.

Here's a pic after overnight soak in pink RIT dye.

Teaser indeed. Sorry, I've been resisting posting for a few weeks thinking I'd wait for it to be released in 1.75, but couldn't resist anymore!
Looks like the pink was dropped for some reason. Here it is again.

they polished it and buffered it up and now i can't even see where it was scratched

I'm sure by now Most of you have played with clear as this is an older thread, but I just got to try out some for myself.
I hadn't seen this thread yet before I printed it and a complete coincidence but the stretchlet is my favorite test print too lol, so once I saw this I figured I would post a pic here as well.

This is with the Makerbot translucent blue PLA.
I bought my Robo used and it came with a nice sized sample of the stuff. Bonus since its pricey stuff. Just now got around to trying it out.

Printed Solid, I am going to be ordering some XT and woodfill here shortly I am dying to try them out as well. However, does the XT require a heated bed that you know of? I'm still on the bare bones first make PLA Robo. Kind of limited so far. One plus with the clear makerbot stuff I have is its standard PLA settings.

I have that exact same bracelet : ). Bought a spool of that material when they first released it for benchmarking. It is a nice bonus to get for free with your printer!

XT and woodfill can both be printed on a cold bed or a warm (50-55C) bed. My robo is also PLA only. Black acrylic bed. I put a sheet of glue stick coated plate glass on it. I print XT at 210 and woodfill around 195 with the stock hot end.
