Hi I have a Robo R1+ that was working fine until it started doing this when starting a new print. Sounds like grinding. I don't know if I need to replace the motor or steps in order to troubleshoot or fix it. Thanks for any directions.

That is likely the stepper driver or the stepper motor failing. You can swap the output of the stepper driver for the extruder to another one (like the X axis) and see if telling the X axis to move spins the extruder stepper. If it does then the motor is fine and the stepper driver is the problem, but if it doesn't work on another driver then the motor is bad.

(do the connection swapping with the printer unplugged from the wall and USB)

Thanks for the fast response. Is there a video or instructions I could follow? I haven't done much more then load filament and press print in the software.

This diagram shows you where the stepper drivers are for each axis.

The R1+ board is slightly different layout:

    But basically the same.

I switched the "E motor" cable with the "X motor" cable and the extruder stepper motor does the same when using the X axis. Is switching the cable the right way to test or do I need to switch the boards? What exact motor do I replace with the one I have is from 2015.

Should I get this motor? Or is there something a little better? Budget is $20-30 for a motor.

    or on amazon

I'll go with amazon because of my prime.

Switching the cable is fine because the wire is not likely to be the issue. If you are really worried you can swap it at both ends, but the wires are not often the problems. Once in a great while it is a wire, but the stepper motors and drivers are the usual suspects.

This is cheaper and has more torque:

As long as the step angle is 1.8 deg (200 steps/rev) and the physical size is close, it doesn't really matter which on you get. I would avoid one with a really low torque, but there are a lot of choices.

sorry that one is out of your budget low (it is LESS than $20) :)

Good thing about Prime (other than fast delivery) is that if you have a problem with a product, Amazon will sort it out.

That one has more than enough torque and should drop right in. Good luck

That just happened to me! I just tightened up the hobble bolt and the gears and it was fine! You can try that as an option!

I just tried this and it seems to have worked. I completely removed the gears and tested to see if it would rotate and it did. I then installed the gears back and it seems to be working. I will now do a test print and report back. Thanks, for chiming in before I installed the new motor. Worse case I now have a backup on hand. Thank you guys!
